James Bay's neighbourhood association, dubbed the JBNEA, has released a survey for residents to complete that will help direct the future of James Bay's development, transportation and other issues.

Has anyone had a chance to see this survey?

James Bay residents who want a say in what their community looks like are being asked to complete a survey by the neighborhood association.
The James Bay Neighbourhood Environment Association has extended the survey completion deadline to Dec. 8.
JBNEA president Tim Van Alstine said survey results will be used to update the community plan and as a guide in evaluating new development and rezoning proposals.
James Bay has been the site of highdensity developments in recent years. Van Alstine said many of them have not followed the James Bay community plan.
The survey was distributed in the November James Bay Beacon community newspaper. Copies are available at the Beacon office in James Bay Square, or from the distribution box near the mall entrance.
The survey asks residents for their opinions on new development, heritage buildings, greenspace, recreation, transportation corridors, safety, affordable housing and expansion of the community’s commercial core.
Drop boxes for completed questionnaires are at James Bay Community School, James Bay Community Centre, New Horizons, the James Bay Community Project, Little Gem Grocery and James Bay Coffee & Books.
The JBNEA meets on the second Wednesday of each month at New Horizons on Menzies Street. All James Bay residents are welcome [that's technically incorrect. Anyone is welcome at these meetings from any where in Victoria or the region].

I'd like to see this survey.
I'm going to look at this as a possitive move on the part of the JBNEA. Collecting opinions from the community is something many community associations could learn from.
If I have time this weekend, I'll swing by my old hood and pick up a copy. I'll scan it and post it.

With copies of the survey only available for pickup, what is the chance that individuals who are not regulars to the New Horizons seniors centre or not aware of the JBNEA will pick up a survey? Seems like the usual suspects will be completing these and not a broad spectrum of the community.

James Bay residents surveyed

Dec 06 2006

If you live in James Bay and haven’t yet filled out the James Bay Neighbourhood Environment Association’s recent survey, there’s still time.

The survey, inserted into the November edition of the James Bay Beacon, is aimed at helping guide the the future direction of development in the community.

“One of the lkey questions is ‘are we really going in the right direction in this community?” said association president Tim Van Alstine.

“We want to get a feel for the community’s values and attitudes and we hope the survey gives us some direction on what we want to pursue.

“There’s a real sense over the last several years that a lot of developments have occurred that the community hasn’t been in tune with.”

Van Alstine said he’s personally concerned about a “mish-mash” approach to development in the area and market pressures that have jeopardized heritage houses and made it difficult to build affordable housing.[Wait a second. Didn't the JBNEA recently champion two super-expensive townhome projects as perfect examples of development for James Bay? And several months back, did the JBNEA not stand against a subsidized seniors care home?]

The community’s close proximity to downtown Victoria has made it a “favoured site” for high density proposals, many of which do not reflect James Bay’s neighbourhood plan, Van Alstine added.

Residents are asked to deposit their completed surveys in one of the drop boxes at the following locations – James Bay Community School, James Bay Community Centre, James Bay Community Project, Little Gem Grocery and James Bay Coffee and Books – by the end of business Friday.

I think you guys are confusing this JBNEA with the other JBNEA...the one that blocked Quadra Pacific's rental apartment projects a couple of years ago.

That reminds me. I went to JB this weekend and they were Decemeber's issue, so couldn't get hold of the survey.

With copies of the survey only available for pickup, what is the chance that individuals who are not regulars to the New Horizons seniors centre or not aware of the JBNEA will pick up a survey? Seems like the usual suspects will be completing these and not a broad spectrum of the community.

The beacon gets delivered to each door, as well as having copies available in JB Square, so every res should have gotten one delivered with their november issue.

Ah, ok that's good on one side. But unless they're mailed, which I doubt would be the case due to costs, folks living in apartments and those "evil" James Bay highrises likely won't get them to their doors. Or will they?

In any case, shouldn't these surveys be mailed out randomly?

Not sure about the apartments, but I was in a t/h and I got one. But I guess that made me one of the "good" guys.
Do freebee papers usually get access to the inside of apartment buildings for delivery?

^ No, AFAIK. If they're not mailed out by Canada Post, they don't make it into the building.

They should be mailed out randomly like I was with the CRD traffic survey.

I haven't heard back either, I think they said the new year.

Hmm, that makes 3 forumers selected for that survey, it doesn't seem so random anymore...
