Tom Ferris of Ferris' Oyster Bar will be opening a tapas restaurant and bar in the former Prime Steakhouse in the Magnolia Hotel come April.

Prime shut down earlier in the year over financial issues that involved restaurant owner Phil Leseur, which may or may not have been tied to Len Barrie's Bear Mountain issues.

Since the closure a place called 50 Nights at the Magnolia has been operating but will be closing today to make way for renovations.

Know it all.

Catalano is the name I heard. There is another partner involved. April 1 was the target but I'm sure it will be later.

Ferris' is one of my favourite places in town, great service, great food, great prices, and a pretty darn good customer base too (garbage clientele can ruin an otherwise perfect place). I've never liked the concept of tapas "We charge you more for the privileged of small portions" but maybe this place will have reasonable prices if it follows at all after Ferris'.

Real tapas are supposed to be cheap. In Spain they are often free while you drink.

It has a whole new look!

^I worked with Aaron when he was a lowly busboy. Great guy. I'm sure the food will be great, but please, I pray in desperation the prices are reasonable.

If you had heard what the lease cost was there, you'd know it'll be tough to do anything with cheap pricing.

^Yeah, I know it won't be downstairs Ferris' cheap, but hope it isn't Matt McNeil expensive!

Ferris's Upstairs does tapas on Sundays and it's awesome. Hopefully they will emulate the laid back atmosphere.

It was April first. Don't know if that is still on track.

They're still on schedule for opening next Monday which is the first I've heard of a restaurant keeping their opening day pledge.

Yeah I was at Ferris' the other day and asked him how it was going. Said they're on track and getting all their furniture this week.

No website yet, so this is the best I have. Can anybody read it? Most of the entrees appear to be in the low-$20s range, the burger is in the teens.

All those fancy pants names. Was looking at the posted menu with come other folks tonight. What the hell is a "gnudi"? If the customer doesn't know what it is, will they order it?

We thought that it was pretentious.

A gnudi is a type of dumpling. Sometimes you just have to call things what they are, in this case it's a gnudi. Part of its flowery menu prose of course - it makes the menu more interesting to read. Otherwise you would just see 'steak' or 'pasta' with a price next to it.

There are some pedestrian items on that menu and some that might require some adventurous spirit. In other words, something for everyone.

Many people will not ask if they don't know to avoid appearing ignorant. These are the people who will have the steak. :)

Matt.
