Police and fire officials are investigating a fatal house fire in Saanichton in the early hours of Sunday.

Central Saanich Fire Chief Stacey Lee said a man in his 60s died in the blaze at a home on Genoa Place, off East Saanich Road, just south of Mount Newton Cross Road.

A younger man was treated after being rescued by fire crews, and a third man escaped on his own, Lee said.

Hopefully it's just false perspective, but that one guy working on his boat looks too close to those flames.

Family remembers Victoria man, Chuck Spence, killed in workplace incident

https://cheknews.ca/...cident-1313620/

“He loved his job. I mean, he worked in the construction industry, he would come home dirty, covered in dirt. He really poured his heart and soul into the hard work. It’s just so tragic that work took him from us,” Janice said.

Janice says Chuck was working at a home in the 1700 block of Ash Road in Saanich, inside a trench installing piping with his employer, when something suddenly went terribly wrong.

The retaining wall beside the trench collapsed, burying both men.

The BC Coroners Service confirmed they are investigating a death that occurred at a construction site on Ash Road in Saanich on Monday, March 23.  According to WorkSafeBC, they were notified of a “serious workplace incident” in the 1700-block of Ash Road at around 12:30 p.m., and they are still investigating the incident.

Not good. Typically a trench of a certain size must have proper supports to prohibit cave-ins.

At around 5:20AM Sunday morning residents called in a house fire 500 meters by road from Sooke’s main fire hall.

Media reported it took “approximately 10 minutes” for fire crews to arrive.

You might say, there are 60 seconds of delay between call and dispatch, then alarm goes off, crews start gearing up, give it 4-5 minutes, and trucks start rolling by 6 minutes, with one minute of travel time to the home according to Google. Why was this response delayed by a further 3 minutes? What if the call had been seven minutes away from the fire hall, not one? Like at SunRiver, or Whiffin Spit?

One of the home’s occupants is in critical condition in hospital.

Know it all.
