Thanks I m flattered but this is way out there in the scope of being a succesful task.
I would be looking in archives in California. Mainly because Dunsmuir spent a lot of time there and his son Alex ran their California portion of the coal business down there.
Alex liked it so much down there that when he found a place he wanted to live which was just a railway stop...he offered the local there a large handsome fountain if tehy named teh town after him. So that is how Dunsmuir California came to be.

Much of Dunsmuirs Coal was shipped to California. Robert and James made many trips down there.
There are many archives in Universities etc that have long forgotten documents just waiting to be found but with so many documents and so many archives and libraries its a needle in a haystack
OR they could be inside the Castle itself hidden where no one would think of looking.

http://www.timescolo...-home-1.2152480Craigdarroch Castle will be able to expand its displays, galleries and programming as a result of the City of Victoria approving zoning changes to a house that borders the castle’s lot.
City council voted unanimously to approve the changes for the house at 1070 Joan Cres., owned by the Craigdarroch Castle Society. The vote will allow the society to move administrative offices and a gift shop out of the castle and into the building next door.
“We want to get operational activities out of the castle — the gift shop and lunchroom, curator’s office, registrar’s office, visitor services, personnel, and volunteers — and into the other building,” said John Hughes, executive director of the Craigdarroch Castle Society.
“Essentially we’re getting the noise out of the castle and putting in more content for our visitors and tourists to experience. There are so many stories we haven’t even started telling properly, but we needed exhibit space.”

Never been before, but that article is intriguing... Probably going to have to go there maybe in the next few weeks.

“We want to get operational activities out of the castle — the gift shop..."
I guess they do not make a lot of money from the gift shop given that moving it to a different building will likely result in a large decrease in sales. There is a reason gift shops are located at the exit to attractions.

Most of what's in that gift shop has nothing to do with the Castle.

I would buy a Robert Dunsmuir bobble head doll, especially if it had a little billyclub for beating coal miners.

Most of what's in that gift shop has nothing to do with the Castle.
As much or more than maple syrup, moose, Irish clothing and linens, and Anne of Green Gables has to do with Victoria but which all feature in shops downtown.
I am simply mystified that a revenue stream that, I would assume, contributes to the maintenance and interpretation of this historic site is being abandoned in this fashion.

I believe they plan to restore the kitchen once the gift shop is moved. People love seeing old-fashioned kitchens. The Tudor kitchen at Hampton Court is one of the most popular features.

Craigdarroch Castle is now offering Augmented Reality Tours for our visitors as an optional enhancement with admission. The Craigdarroch Castle Augmented Reality Tour brings the castle and the family who lived here to life, helping visitors learn and experience as much about the Castle and Victorian times as possible in a single visit. In the truest sense, Augmented Reality ‘augments the visitor experience through images, voices from the past, and deeper explanations of the Castle’s architecture, inhabitants and unique artifacts.

Victoria’s Craigdarroch Castle kitchen area being restored to pre-1919 state
The castle’s $288,000 restoration is funded by the province and B.C. Heritage
The castle’s food preparation area will be returned to the Dunsmuir era, while abiding by the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.
“Bringing the kitchen back to the Dunsmuir era presents a powerful opportunity to broaden the visitor experience,” said John Hughes, Craigdarroch Castle executive director.
“A kitchen is a place that attracts us all and has a universal language.”
Hughes said 86 per cent of the castle’s visitors surveyed expressed a desire to experience the kitchen and wanted to learn more about Dunsmuir era servant activities and food preparation.
Plans to restore the kitchen have been around since 2017, when the museum gift shop was moved from the kitchen space to the visitor centre.
