I immediately assumed the article was about the redwood in Centennial Square. You know, the big one beside City Hall in the heart of the city.

Nope they're talking about some ugly scraggly tree across from the cheezy min Empire State Building at the tourist info centre.

I have certainly noticed it over the years, but would I have given a second thought to its absence if there hadn't been all this publicity? Doubtful.

In case you haven't been keeping track there are four hearts of the city, five gateways and two and a half centres.
Beacon Hill Park is the lungs of the city but I have never found out just how many lungs that is. Common sense would say two, but, hey, this is Victoria

So that's why it's so hard to kill it...

BHP is the lung (singular) of Victoria. It was officially designated as such, in order to make a lung story short.

I have been advocating the removal of that tree for years. Did you know it wasn't planted until the 1970s?

Still makes it older than the Gastown steam clock! Provided it was planted in that location before 1977.

Saanich took a first step on the new Finnerty Road upgrade project on Tuesday as crews began the process of removing six Garry oaks.
There was a pushback from a small group to save the oaks, with a 90-person petition presented by locals Harriet and Gerald Graham.
“Five mature, healthy Garry oaks and one wildlife Garry oak, to be precise, [were removed] over the objections of the Cadboro Bay Residents Association board as well as 90 local residents who signed a petition asking Saanich mayor and council to intervene, to no avail, unfortunately,” said Gerald Graham

Victoria will boost its spending on tree management by $868,000 — a move at least one councillor says could quicken the demise of the city’s aging cherry trees and their much loved blossoms.
Councillors on Thursday endorsed a proposal by Coun. Laurel Collins to allocate the additional revenue for the city’s Urban Forest Master Plan. The city already spends $1.7 million on tree management.
Coun. Geoff Young voted against the allocation, which, he said, is an important area but does not merit such a substantial increase in funding given other city needs.
Staff say the city has direct control over roughly 33,000 trees — about one-third of the urban forest inventory. The other two-thirds consists of trees on private land.
Thomas Soulliere, the city’s director of parks, said the additional funds will make a significant impact on tree management.
“It allows us to have the additional capacity to expend additional effort, particularly on the private tree inventory, and to really focus on the roughly two-thirds of the total city inventory,” Soulliere said.
