Saanich's Mayor was on CFAX this morning and said that he sees a definitive opportunity for a relatively large mixed-used development here.
Anyone know anything about this?

As most remember, Lumberworld burnt down about a year ago.

Yeah, they're still running.
I think he knows something about their future/ or lack of future plans that we don't.

God please don't let it be a sea of suburban low-rises!!

That location could be such a gem for the area if done right. The problem is that it will mostly be another car-centric condo / Blockbuster development.

This location is on the No. 6 Bus route and only a block from the No. 26 so it is well served by high frequency bus service.

The first thought that jumps to mind is a four building development with a small plaza in the middle. There could outward facing ground floor commerical along Quadra and Reynolds and then perhaps some inward commercial on the two buildings on Reynolds and Borden.

I think 6 - 8 storeys would be appropriate.

Makes you wonder where they're planning to put the cut-through. That's a long block, for sure.

Well there already is the Galloping Goose going diagonally they could easily have an entrance that went through to Reynolds school at the South end of the Borden lot.

I wonder when the folks at Lumberworld decided not to rebuild? Last I heard they had plans to.

I thought they did too. Maybe the new Home Depot a km or two away makes them think twice?

If it's saanich's idea of density here, it will be more the crack shack glasgow cookie cutter apartments.

Lumberworld wants to rebuild with "temporary" store at Saanich site
Quadra Street building was destroyed by fire
Kim Westad, Times Colonist
Published: Friday, March 30, 2007
A temporary Ace Lumberworld is in the works, although temporary could mean 10 years.

The popular store was burned down June 3, 2006, in a blaze that destroyed the main building and caused millions of dollars in damage. Saanich police are still investigating the suspected arson, with no one yet charged.

They should just wait until humans evolve without pinkies and they could be the first to sell four finger garden gloves.

No no no, you're thinking of the little toe! That's the one slated for extinction!

“We have to determine...what would be acceptable to Saanich,” Flaig said.

Right, because Saanich has such high standards.

They have to be careful. People might mistake it for Bear Mountain Arena.

Remind me again, how long has that "temporary" building been standing on the supermarket's parking lot over in Cordova Bay?
