They are working on making improvements to the Tyee Rd. / Bay St. intersection. The construction is supposed to complete by November but until then there will be delays and detours. Most significantly will probably be the rerouting of north bound traffic onto Wilson. It was really jammed at lunch today.

Okay, the reroute onto Wilson has been removed. Traffic seems to be normal on both Tyee and Bay.

Can you believe that there has never been a crosswalk on the east side of the Bay/Tyee intersection? It's about damn time the City did something about this!

I hope they'll finally get around to dealing with the dangerous "Y" intersection at the nexus of Bay, Catherine and Esquimalt. I remember the City had this on their agenda in the early 2000's but cars continue to crash there and near misses with pedestrians are a regular occurrence.

^ Thought I saw a plan once for a round-about there?

Re: Catherine and Bay St.

My office sits right on the intersection. See a lot of near misses.

Received notification yesterday of a meeting next week to discuss just this. Seems to be something on the agenda with the city for 2014.

I always make the left turn here onto Catherine heading toward Esquimalt at this Y from the small part that is not a "Y" but a 90° turn.
Anyone who doesnt do it this way is asking for problems. I started doing it this way in large truck over 2o years ago because this is the only way you can safely make that turn and see whats coming form your right and then I automatically do it in cars and have ever since because it is smart and the visibility is great.

What History Buff is saying is he turns right onto Dundas, left onto Catherine, then right onto Esquimalt.

I agree that this is a much safer way to navigate that intersection. The current setup is sort of a fools game.

Yes, I was unfortunately in a near miss on that intersection over the summer.

Just for clarification here are we talking about Catherine and Bay or Tyee and Bay that is the accident prone corner?

wisevictoria is at Catherine and Bay. I'm not sure it's any more dangerous than it was 25 years ago. We all know it has a funny alignment.

City crews have fumbled the ball at Tyee and Bay. The south pedestrian crossing has been closed to pedestrians with no other "safe" way to cross Tyee Road than at Harbour Road about 100 meters away. The pedestrian island on the southeast corner is just taped off and no provisions are visible to allow pedestrians a way to cross nor is there any signage. I think these guys must have forgotten than this is the only way pedestrians can safely access and cross the Bay Street Bridge if they're walking down Tyee or Bay streets.

Very much so. The volume of traffic has increased, the neighbourhood has grown by several thousand people, and now there is a transit route that runs through this intersection. In fact it can be so dodgy at times that the #10 westbound no longer uses it but turns right onto Wilson off of Bay, then left onto Catherine, then right onto Esquimalt. It's much safe that way and the bus isn't caught in a game of frogger each time it tries to cross.

Well, that's the easy fix then, right? Have all traffic do that. EDIT: Oh, I mean have them take the little right to Dundas, then they are square into the intersection. They can make that a 4-way stop, then nobody has to worry if that car coming up the hill on Catherine is gonna stop, or turn off onto Bay.

Why not just eliminate the short section of Dundas between Catherine and Bay, and the section of Catherine south towards Bay?

Back to the intersection at hand, CFAX is warning everyone to avoid the Bay/Tyee intersection tomorrow as temporary traffic lights are being installed and the intersection will be controlled by a flag person. :o

I would be happy to let the city cede this land to me.

The finished intersection. I cannot recall if the previous intersection had pedestrian crosswalk buttons but this one does not appear to. It's also an interesting island configuration.

On the west side of the intersection the crossing was always fully automated, but what was crews did was ad a crossing along the east side. It was ridiculous not to have a pedestrian crossing on the east side for such a long time.

They seem to be using that configuration more often, as it is scooter friendly. The intersection at Cedar Hill and North Dairy has a similar island.
