Note the snow stoppers on the roof. Luckily no trees nearby, but then that also shows the roof was more an aesthetic choice than a practical one.

Know it all.

So where is this "Seaview" house located? I assumed it was that big new place on Prospect Place in Oak Bay, but it seems not.

Edit: I suppose it must be 2750 Seaview Road by Cadboro Bay.

Dang, must be nice to have a view like this on a nice day.

Without the aerial, you might even think the house to the north is worse.

^ Built in 1938, very interesting.   I wonder what the roads out to there were like, then.   And how they moved those boulders into place back then.

PINFOLD RESIDENCE
3045 McAnally Street
Albert & Jennie Pinfold, Owners; 1930

One of Saanich’s best and earliest examples of the Colonial Revival style, this two-storey, side-gabled, symmetrical house features eight paned upper sashes over single-pane lower sashes and paired upper and lower windows on either side of the main entrance. The house also displays a simplified version of the traditional entrance with sidelights and an elliptical fanlight, and a classic New England colour scheme of white body and trim with green shutters. The years between the two World Wars were a time of entrenched traditionalism, and Period Revival houses built in the 1920s and 1930s reflected the modern ideals of economy and good design as well as an ongoing pride in the past. It was presumed at the time that a well-built house would display a traditional and readily identifiable style as a hallmark of good taste. The use of the various Colonial Revival styles had gained new popularity during the late 1920s at the time of the American Sesquicentennial, when there was renewed interest in the country’s architectural heritage.

The first owners of the house were Albert Frederick Pinfold (1897-1973) who was born in Reading, England, and his mother Jennie Pinfold (née Cruddas, 1867-1949), born in Yorkshire, England. Albert was the manager of the fur department in his brother William’s firm, New Method Laundries Limited, at one time the largest laundry chain in western Canada. It is believed that Albert and his mother Jennie had this house built by contractor Saxton-White. The barn on the property is a relic from when Annie Styles (1861-1944) and Charles Acheson McAnally (1858-1921), both former residents of England, owned the property from 1906 to 1930.

A tough decision for the next owner.

Do you demolish it or just gut the interior?

Or do preserve it and lean in to the museum vibe?

It's on the Saanich Heritage Register, not sure what that means.

The Saanich Heritage Register 2008 is a record of buildings that are determined to have community heritage value.  Saanich Council passed a resolution adopting amendments to the Register in 2008.  There are close to 300 heritage properties registered in Saanich. Over eighty of these sites have a Heritage Designation Bylaw protecting the exterior character of the building.

The Purpose of the Heritage Register:

  1. Properties listed on the Register may be protected by Municipal Council through a variety of measures outlined in the BC Local Government Act;
  2. The Register is used by Saanich staff in the decision making process for the future of each property listed; and
  3. The Register is a great record and resource for Saanich residents, staff and Council on the history of our community.
