"Private beechfront" is always a bit of a thing to say, as we all know there are no private beaches.  But maybe this one is hard/impossible to get to over land from a public beach access?

So is mining mogul Robert Friedland the buyer of that tony $17-million West Vancouver waterfront property? It sure looks that way. Although early speculation favoured broadcaster Oprah Winfrey, Friedland -- founder and chairman of Vancouver-based Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. -- or companies associated with him now have the inside track.
 
Land title documents say the property, at 3330 Radcliffe Ave., was transferred Sept. 3 to Mountain Holding Business Ltd., whose postal address in land title documents turns out to be that of Goodmans, a law firm with offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Hong Kong. But the Goodmans guys aren't talking. B.C.'s corporate registry says Mountain Holding was incorporated on June 10, 2004, in the British Virgin Islands, with head offices at 999 Canada Place, Suite 654. And that, coincidentally, is also headquarters for Ivanhoe Mines and sister company Ivanhoe Energy Inc. Ivanhoe Mines officials also declined to comment.
 
Friedland, perhaps best known for negotiating the 1996 blockbuster sale of the Voisey's Bay nickel deposit to Inco Ltd. for $4.3-billion, has spent most of the past decade in Asia, jetting around the globe from bases in Hong Kong and Singapore. Ivanhoe Mines is developing the $1-billion (U.S.) Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold deposit in Mongolia, which Friedland, a Buddhist, points out is a Buddhist, democratic nation with a modern mining code that happens to lie next door to metal-starved China.

LSD

Robert Friedland resigned from Bowdoin College in 1970 after being arrested by federal authorities for the possession of an estimated $100,000 worth of LSD. He was sentenced to two years in federal prison, but received early release on probation. The conviction was expunged in 1986.

He graduated in 1974 from Reed College, Oregon, with a political science degree. During his senior year at Reed, Friedland was student body president.

All One Farm

During his time at Reed he met Steve Jobs with whom he shared an interest in Eastern spirituality. At the time, Friedland served as the caretaker of an apple farm south of Portland that was owned by his millionaire uncle Marcel Muller and Jobs would come on the weekends and help with the apple orchard, which served as the inspiration for the name of his company, Apple Inc. Friedland turned the orchard into a commune called All One Farm. His followers were not paid for working on commercial endeavors there.

File that bio as the umpteen-bajillionth example of a familiar formula:

 

-compressed timelines

-interactions with FBI, CIA or other police/intelligence services at a young age
-coincidental associations with notable individuals who would soon enjoy their own rise to exceptional wealth & fame

-seemingly significant lack of experience and/or knowledge and/or resources, and yet opportunities aplenty

-rapid & extreme material success (of course)

-curious avoidance of severe legal/personal consequences for seemingly severe offences

 

Come on. We're supposed to believe he was a serious drug dealer at a distinguished college and that the authorities cracked down on him one way or another, and yet all of those legal difficulties, court appearances, prison time, etc. didn't hinder the completion of his education? Countless dedicated students who weren't embroiled in such messes would nevertheless have completed their degrees in about the same time as he did. Heck, how did he manage to enroll in another distinguished institution so easily after getting busted from the first distinguished institution? That alone should be enough to wake up anyone.

 

Conclusion: nothing in that dude's life is what it seems to be.
