Social media to be monitored by federal government

OTTAWA—Big Brother is watching you — on just about every social-media platform you can imagine.

Tweets, public Facebook posts and YouTube videos could soon be subject to round-the-clock scrutiny by the federal government, a procurement document posted this week by Public Works and Government Services Canada suggests.

Welcome to media monitoring in the 21st century, when simply leafing through a stack of newspapers in the morning is about as antiquated as, well, newspapers.

The federal government is seeking a firm that “continuously monitors social media content on a daily basis in near real time and (can) provide web-based, online media metrics and reporting capabilities.”

Excellent news.  Maybe they'll see my complaints about the noisy neighbour and do something about the abysmal building code. ;)  One can dream.

I don't see the story here. Internet media monitoring firms have been around for YEARS and both Government and Corporations use them all the time for reputation management. Heck even Google offers a service for free which will provide updates on keywords and topics that you want to follow.

Media monitoring is standard procedure for any government that wants to understand how its policies and practices are being received by the public, spokesman Pierre-Alain Bujold wrote in an emailed statement.

I'm sure Mr. Harper will see how poorly his position on marijuana prohibition is being received and change his tune.

Great, now he's going to think I'm a pothead for posting this.

Sounds like the feds are covering their butts in light of the Snowden revelations. "Oh, yes we 'will' start monitoring social media now, cough cough..."

Ya, bit of a non-issue really.  Anybody can monitor social media.

Right, then. What was the last thing I posted other than on VV?

The rfp does not suggest that the monitor should find peoples actual names or accounts across multiple platforms. It's just monitoring to gauge general sentiment. Sound like. Good idea to me.

They are watching VV to see whooo will be the first person to reach 20,000 posts. Currently VictoriaHockeyFan and Mike K. have a combined total of around 31,000 posts in the seven years they've been at it, and the feds are reading every one of them.

^That doesn't include the Great Purge of 2008 when we decided to have a couple thousand lopped off our counts so as not to intimidate newbies.
