The world will not end next year.

Civilization should also make it that far, but the odds are lower.

Mt. Baker is "steaming" everyday. Basil Oldfield and I flew over and looked at it in 1978.

Gosh! you are right Sparky. I didn't know that.

So now I will predict that it will erupt in 2014.

Here is a photo sent in by a loyal subscriber, taken from her deck at sunset near Big Lake [east of Mount Vernon] in January 2011. These plumes are clearly rising from several fumarole clusters just inside the crater’s west rim, and are about 1500 feet tall.

Almost all of the incumbents running in 2014 will be re-elected

This is probably true and makes me very sad.

Another earthquake or tsunami will claim 50000+ lives.

2 major pipelines will be approved (likely Northern Gateway, and possibly Keystone; Kinder Morgan in 2015, if ever)

Victoria will have a heat wave in May and a soggy June

USA further relaxes embargoes on Cuban products

Enbridge gets the go-ahead for Northern Gateway, but the feds have to step in and guarantee funding in order for preliminary work to begin, due to potential court challenges.  But preliminary work begins.

Relative peace in the Middle East, the fading of the Arab Spring.

Good weather locally, starting in May and running all summer, relatively good tourism numbers.

I expect the opposite to happen!

I think that everyone was excited about Egypt, now that seems like a bust.  Libya I'm not all too up on what's happening, but it does not look like any type of democracy.   Syria looks a lot quieter, their uprising did not work.

On the Palestine/Israel file, I say they are tired.

The key word may be 'relative'. Syria has peace talks planned, but people are still being killed there daily. Iran is still a big mess, Iraq isn't much better, and as long as there are Shiites and Sunni's living relatively close together, there will always be problems. Israel has the power and backing to take care of themselves, but has always been very aggressive with their 'defense'. Possibly issues with Lebanon there.

Peace never lasts long in that region. We can always hope though!

At least one, but no more than three rumors from "an official source" stating that Ikea will be opening up somewhere on the island.

That was interesting to look back and see what was predicted and what came to pass.

I think the thread need to be renamed to Predictions for the New Year so that we can continue.

Here are mine for 2015:

  • The Oak Bay Deer Cull will be expanded to the entire CRD by Nils Jensen.
  • North Korea will protest the CRD deer cull.
  • The population explosion of black bunnies at Vic General will force a mass march on the Provincial Legislature in June.
  • VHF's office will survive a 1.3 magnitude quake.
