I know someone who got caught making that left turn from Douglas onto Market where it's no left from 4-6pm.  It was shortly after 4, traffic was light, not holding anyone up and it appeared completely normal and safe to make the turn, but someone decided to send IRSU to that location that day and he got caught

it reminds me a bit of a trap cops used to set up for southbound Douglas traffic at Market.

Cars would approach Humber green and seeing they just missed the light would turn left onto market to go up to blanshard.

No cars actually tried that turn with heavy oncoming traffic (where a crash might occur) because they did not want to tie up traffic behind.

But when there was no oncoming traffic it really hurt nobody and certainly did not cause crashes. But it was a favourite spot for cops to set up for fines.

They made bank BECAUSE it was a safe turn. that’s not real traffic safety work.

do they have a good case?  it's not like traffic patterns or volumes near there have changed in 40 years.

A group of residents is calling on Saanich for increased safety measures in the neighbourhood.

Speed has long been a concern for those living on Cumberland and Union roads – the site of a fatal collision in September 2019. A petition started by resident Craig Fraser asks Mayor Fred Haynes, council and the engineering department to implement speed control and other safety measures in the area. The petition had 560 signatures as of July 30.

According to Fraser, the residents of Union Road – which lies between Quadra Street and Blenkinsop Road – have been voicing their concerns about “high-speed vehicle traffic” in the neighbourhood for about 20 years.

I lived on Cumberland for a few years and know the area well. No, its not really an issue any more than any other neighbourhood. I think what happens is that people see one area get special attention with roads being closed etc and think, why not our area, who doesnt want to live on a no-through road? What my have led to concerns is the ridiculous 30 zone recently implemented on Reynolds which may have pushed more traffic over to Union.

I will admit to in my younger years taking a bit of a speed run up Union or Reynolds.

but back then it was necessary to clean out your carbeurators occasunslly. so it was legal.

more signs is always the answer.

New signage has also been installed to alert road users to the rumble strips. Haynes said at least 90 news signs are planned for Prospect Lake Road as further road safety upgrades are implemented in accordance with the road safety audit conducted in March in partnership with ICBC.

More signs to look at means less time to look at the road.
