The 17th of September, 1939 was the start of the Soviet invasion from the east, to be exact. 16 days after Hitler invaded from the west.

The Soviets weren’t stupid. They knew Poland would shift its military assets to the western front, leaving the east exposed. Whether or not they had invaded on the “same day” isn’t really relevant. They also attacked Ukraine, and Latvia which was under the Polish-Latvian union. That whole area was under turmoil with Ukrainian aggression starting in the early 30s.

the Soviet policy of Glasnost (openness) would finally reveal that Molotov-Ribbentrop had included secret protocols

If it makes you feel better, Hopper's sentence could have said "finally confirm" rather than "finally reveal".

But what term you feel is correct depends on which evil, lying dictatorship you feel is the most believable. They both had reasons to spin the truth and deny the existence of the agreement. And the Soviets kept insisting it was hearsay right up until the '80s, mostly because they were afraid of Baltic independence. They never even called it an invasion in the first place--they said they were doing the Poles a favour. The Nazis lied about it because they were somewhat concerned about earning a one-way trip to the hanging gallows.

there is some grey area for sure and even the experts might disagree somewhat.

the experts disagree somewhat on the reasons that hitler turned and attacked Russia.

Most of us know the war would have been very different has that not happened but you might look at any number of infection points beteeen 1938 and 1945 and say things would have been different.

This is an example of how little experts might actually know about the subjects they believe they know everything about.

Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, the military commander leading vaccine logistics at the Public Health Agency of Canada, has left his post and is now the subject of a military investigation, according to a statement from the Department of National Defence.

The brief statement does not describe any allegations against Fortin or explain the nature of the investigation.

^ Don't know if we can read much into that. General Hillier left his post as the vaccine boss in Ontario after collecting $20K a month for a few months and deciding that the BS wasn't worth the effort.

I am not sure I understand the general euphoria that many socialists seem to feel every time a senior military person gets taken down. The military is responsible for a nasty little job that most of us wish we never have to do. I tend to cut them some slack lest I be ask to join them with a rifle in a desert somewhere.

Former chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance has been charged under Section 139 of the Criminal Code with one count of obstruction of justice following a probe by military police into allegations of inappropriate behaviour that were first reported by Global News more than five months ago.

Vance has been at the centre of a military reckoning over sexual misconduct allegations levelled against multiple senior leaders since Global News first reported on the allegations against him.

The Royal Canadian Navy is launching a push to replace Canada’s beleaguered submarine fleet, setting the stage for what will almost certainly be a debate around the need for such vessels.

Defence officials have revealed to the Canadian Press that a dedicated team is being created to start figuring out what Canada needs in new submarines as the sunset on the military’s existing fleet draws closer.

_____________

The vessels have since spent more time in dock for repairs and maintenance than at sea, with Ottawa sinking billions of dollars into the fleet over the past 20-plus years to address a series of problems and incidents including fires and faulty welding.

The most recent incident saw HMCS Corner Brook suffer what may have been permanent damage last year after an errant test damaged the submarine’s main ballast tank. Corner Brook previously ran aground in 2011, while a fire broke out on board in 2019.

just because we have 4 crappy subs now does not mean we need more.

Seem to recall having said this myself.

Ditching the whole program would certainly let Babcock off the hook for one 'damaged potentially beyond repair' submarine.

Are submarines even relevant anymore?

My memory is poor here but didn’t we loose a bet and have to take these subs from the British who didn’t want them anymore? Did we trade them a broken down plywood Avro Arrow?

no more c****y ones? Or just no more altogether? Because we do have a lot of coastline and I understand some surface ice up north. How else will we know what’s/who’s down there?

Would have been cheaper to buy some nuclear submarines from the us but there's a strong anti us bias in procurement. The first priority is always of course what benefit is there for Quebec.

Since none of our subs have been operational for any extended period of time over the past decade it is a valid question.

Belligerent nation: "You can't boss us around, puny Canada".

Canada: "Oh, yeah, our submarines are on the way to your coastal ports".

Belligerent nation: "We aren't scared of your subs. Are you going to attempt to fire a torpedo at us lol".

Canada: "No, we will simply dock our subs in your ports and then you'll have to maintain them".

Belligerent nation: "Oh, please, God no; we'll sign any treaty".

The US wouldn't sell them to us and they actively tried to stop us from procuring them from anywhere. They even invoked the US-UK Mutual Defense Agreement to bar the UK from selling us the technology to build them ourselves.

The US wants to(or wanted to at the time) be the only Navy in the western hemisphere operating under the Arctic Ice.
