The kid was pissed because it was advertised as a $200 prize and his regular dealer said that's at most only $75 worth of stuff.

I'm sure the 8 year old would have used the Kitchenaid mixer or the relaxing spa gift certifcate.

It is just the same thing when an under age person wins booze in a raffle

Canopy Growth taking a hit and making a big chop today in both capacity and jobs - big surprise like most of the pot ops/stocks, they have big dreams but precious little actual capital -

The companies are not the problem, it’s the black market that is the problem.

Molson’s would be in the same position of the local brewpub down the street didn’t have to pay liquor taxes, had no government-regulated production facilities and didn’t pay staff to manage the phones, liaise with the government and manage expensive facilities, let alone brew the product and ensure production quality under a regulated environment.

Canopy’s value, on the other hand, will rise as the operation becomes more efficient. Yesterday’s announcement will be a huge step in that direction.

But all in all legalization in Canada has been a dismal failure, and Canadians that invested into this industry in good faith are now left holding the bag for the government’s huge misstep.

The good news is this will be corrected over time and Canada’s producers are well positioned to capitalize on international markets.

The black market has responded to legalization by dropping their prices, a lot.   Under $3 a gram for larger amounts (up to an ounce) are not uncommon.

BC is the province in Canada where the black market has remained the strongest, but it is decreasing in size.  Elsewhere the legal market is now significantly larger than the black market.

The companies on the business also have a problem in that they are growing the stuff faster than there is demand for and there are too many companies in the market.

Dropping prices and upping the service. You can order by app and have it delivered to your house within a few hours here in Vancouver.

Which is unfathomable to me, considering the lengths the feds make legitimate growers and retailers go to secure the rights to operate.

One thing to also consider in this is that people who have been successfully growing in the black market for decades were given no path to come into the legal market.    If instead the government had worked with black market growers to become the legal suppliers of the recreational market you could have had a much bigger reduction in the black market.   Instead the licenced growers for medical marijuana were allowed to become the recreational suppliers as well.

Here in BC, the people who are best at growing cannabis are not the ones doing the growing in the legal market.

I am not sure who the overregulaton of legal cannabis is helping.

I’m not sure if the optics of that would have been acceptable to the general public.

Everything will work itself out eventually.

Everything will eventually work itself out but the Federal government did not need to make the whole process so byzantine.   The one factor they never took seriously is that the barrier to growing and selling weed is much lower than making and selling your own booze.

Are we sure? Growing decent pot at scale is quite difficult for the average individual. It's easier to grow it outdoors, for sure, but that still requires fertilizing, water, maintenance, protection from pests and thieves (if you're growing it at scale). Indoor cultivation is quite a bit more complicated.

It's much easier to brew your own wine. You set it and forget it. Vodka is a by-product of the wine or beer brewing process and distilling it is actually quite easy/safe if you have the right equipment.

I did not say you could not make booze at home, but try to sell it, not likely going to work.    With cannabis there is no branding to worry about and it is easy to move around a large amount of it.

It does not take a lot of plants to make to produce amount.   Four indoor plants can produce an annual harvest of about 7 kg.   Sold at $4 a gram this is $28,000.  I use the example of four plants because you can now grow that amount legally.  7 kg is way more than even the hardest core stoner can use in a year which means the person growing is going to have excess.

Move up to 40 plants in a basement and you are looking at 70 kg

7 kg is just over 19 grams a day.  If you smoked it that would be roughly 3,500 mg a day of THC.   500 mg would enough to leave Tommy Chong on the floor

If you ate it yes. Smoking due to absorbency limitations you’ll probably be fine the keyword is probably.
