I am toying with the idea of going to see The Magic Flute from the Met at Silver City this Saturday morning. Toying, because apparently it's English-language and a condensed version.

I think it's a neat idea, however, and events or showings like this might not happen again if they don't get any bums in the seats. Meaning, attendance, not winos in the theatre.

I believe there have been wrestling events, what, broadcast? to theatres, but this is the first time I've been aware of something like this being done.

My BBCode is weak:

Cineplex transfers Met’s Magic Flute to larger cinema after sell-out

Ottawa Citizen
Published: Thursday, December 28, 2006

If you were among the disappointed opera buffs who heard that Saturday’s live broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute is sold out at Ottawa’s SilverCity cinemas, you’re in luck.

Cineplex Entertainment, which had originally scheduled the screening for a 150-seat cinema, has transferred the broadcast to another cinema at the SilverCity complex that seats an additional 100 people. Tickets are available at the SilverCity box office or online through the website http://www.cineplex.com.

Saturday’s broadcast, starting at 1:30 p.m. is the first of six live broadcasts the Met is planning through April, to cinemas in the U.S. and Canada that are equipped with satellite-based digital High-Definition (HD) projection systems. That includes the SilverCity cinemas and dozens of other theatres across Canada and the U.S. An official with Cineplex says ticket sales in major cities across Canada have exceeded expectations.

This production of Magic Flute is described as a family-friendly version, condensed to about 100 minutes and sung in English, with no intermission.

The production is staged by Julie Taymor, who directed Broadway’s The Lion King, and it makes extensive use of puppetry. The conductor will be Met maestro James Levine. The cast is scheduled to include Ying Huang as Pamina, Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, Nathan Gunn as Papageno, Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night, and René Pape as Sarastro.

One screen sold out here, too, and they added a second. Loads of fun! I'm so glad I got myself out of the house for this one. It was a much more enjoyable way to spend a Saturday morning than doing laundry and all those other mundane chores that wait until the weekend. More are coming!
