$1 coffee to-stay for LJ!

I have gone into McDonalds for coffee on long drives. I take my own travel mug in though.

The man’s never been to the architectural circus that is downtown Vancouver, I guess.

KFC has been doing a retro thing in some Asian markets.

Although KFC’s 3-letter initials are featured prominently, the brand’s previously-known name, “Kentucky Fried Chicken” is also showcased in full, mounted as 3D letters in a stylised manner.

I love fried chicken. But I don’t just mean to eat. Some summers I spend many days just literally frying chicken for sport.

It’s like fishing.

More of a fantastical retro vibe than an actual retro vibe, of course.

So do I. Because my oldest son is named Sport and so is my Rottweiler. I won't tell you which one weighs 300 pounds.

The critics will say there's nothing sporting about it, but they've never tried running after a chicken while carrying a sloshing bucket of scalding hot oil.

Your next drink order from McDonald's Canada may come in a frosty cup all but glowing from its fluorescence or brimming with a layer of foam thick enough to give you a milk moustache.

The fast-food giant is reimagining the drink menu you grew up with in favour of a new roster launching May 5. It will keep the classics — pop, coffee, tea, milk and juice — but position crafted sodas, fruity refreshers and foamy iced coffees as new, permanent cornerstones.

The focus on fruit, froth and carbonation is meant to tap into a category the chain considers to be the Canadian quick-service industry's fastest growing and turn McDonald's into a restaurant people think of for more than Big Macs, fries or nuggets.

"We want to become a beverage destination," McDonald's Canada president Annemarie Swijtink told The Canadian Press.

"Instead of a drink next to food, it's more like if you want a beverage, think about us."

If it works, the strategy will lure in a younger generation that lets social media guide eating habits and push those less beholden to the scroll toward trendier beverages that can supercharge profits.

It will also place the company in more direct competition with frappuccino haven Starbucks and Tim Hortons, which has long sold Iced Capps and more recently, introduced fruity quenchers, energy drinks and fancier iced coffees.

How much sugar water would thieves have to steal before it actually represented a loss for the company? Methinks you could probably leave a faucet running 24/7 and still turn a profit if just a few people actually bother to pay.

I’m guessing McDonald’s notices an increasing share of sales is delivery services, so in-store amenities just arent required anymore.
Every recent McDonald’s renovation I’ve seen reduces the dine in footprint and creates a new dedicated delivery driver pickup area. Free refills probably aren’t needed anymore.

It's an additional machine to maintain for every store too. They still need one behind the counter for drivethrough regardless.

Yes, and the machines are so often unkempt and in a poor state.

Rotten Ronnie’s has been an area of refuge for me though. Air conditioning, wifi, ice cream and coffee was such a luxury. I do owe them for that so I can’t hate on them too much. I do miss their original chicken nuggets that were made from compression molded chicken skin. Way better than the gas filled injection molded cartilage nuggets.
