Even though I'm a terrible skater, it's a fun activity. I haven't been for a few years, but I've been to the ice at Oak Bay Rec Centre a couple of times.

Just be careful!

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has rejected the allegations of negligence filed by a woman who sued the City of Nanaimo after being injured in a roller-skating accident.

Carmela Amerato (formerly Roper) of Nanaimo claimed she was injured after she skated over some Skittles candy at the city-run Beban Park Arena in June 2004.

Amerato testified she saw a young boy eating the candy from a bag, spilling it on the rink surface.

About 45 minutes later, Amerato said she felt as though her right leg was being grabbed. She spun and fell and was badly injured.

Her daughter, son-in-law, and another woman testified they saw Skittles scattered on the rink near where she fell.

But city staff working at the arena that night disputed those claims.

They noted that they strictly forbid anyone from eating food during disco roller-skating night, and that they were out patrolling, watching for any signs of smuggled snacks.

They said they saw none. Nor did they see skate-catching candies anywhere near where Amerato fell, they testified.

Judge S. James Shabbits ruled that he believed the city workers that there were no hazards left on the rink, and that Amerato's fall was not the result of any negligence on their part.

He went on to say that if Amerato did see a boy spilling Skittles and didn't report it, she herself was negligent for exposing herself to the danger.

Exactly! And she herself was an idiot for rolling over said Skittles.

People should be given an IQ test before operating any set of wheels.
