PPC not invited, but HuffPost has a panelist.

Surprised by the Huffpost invite, though Althia Raj will do well.

I wonder if Rosemary Barton can leave her biases behind.

It is odd. Why not MSN.ca? Or the folks who man Shaw’s news page?

Is it? Jackerbie gave a pretty concise answer to why the lineup is who it is.

Members of the Canadian Debate Production Partnership:

  • CBC News
  • Radio-Canada
  • Global News
  • CTV News
  • The Toronto Star and the Torstar chain
  • HuffPost Canada
  • HuffPost Quebec
  • La Presse
  • Le Devoir
  • L'Actualité

And technically Shaw owns Global (via Corus), so they are included. Also MSN.ca just aggregates content from other news sources, like Google News...do they even have any of their own reporters?

Besides, there's nothing that says other media companies or organizations can't organize their own debates. These are just for the two organized by the Leaders' Debates Commission. If Rebel Media or the local Shaw Community outlet wants to try and organize a debate, all the power to them.

^ The notable omission is Postmedia, which apparently chose not to be part of the Partnership

Eric Cline: The expulsion of Erin Weir was nothing short of an NDP travesty

https://nationalpost...an-ndp-travesty

The expulsion of Regina-Lewvan MP Erin Weir from the NDP caucus in May of 2018 was welcomed by those seeking the end of workplace sexual harassment and by those who heard party leader Jagmeet Singh say survivors needed to be believed and workplaces needed to be safer. It should not have been. The entire affair was a travesty, one that still haunts the NDP as the next election approaches.

Weir had engaged in conduct described by an investigator as “on the low-end of the scale,” and which would not normally be understood as “sexual harassment.” Even if they thought it was, hardly anyone would imagine it was cause for public shaming, expulsion and banishment. In fact, now that the facts are known, most people should find Singh’s conduct more troubling than Weir’s.

- snip -

Christine Moore, NDP MP for the Quebec riding of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, stated in an email to her caucus colleagues and leader that Weir had harassed many female employees of the NDP and that she would be afraid to be alone with him.

This was not the first such claim Moore had made. In 2014, Moore had told Justin Trudeau that two of his Liberal members had sexually harassed two female NDP MPs. Trudeau expelled them and banned them from running in 2015, without due process. Both men denied sexual harassment. It was later known that one of them had a consensual relationship with a colleague of Moore’s who had no complaint. The other MP had spent the night with Moore. She said she gave him a condom and went to the bathroom. While there, she said she had a flashback to a time she was assaulted and from then on, although she did not tell the Liberal member, she was not consenting “in her mind,” to the sexual activity that followed her return from the bathroom. Later, she said this encounter amounted to sexual harassment.

- snip -

When condemning Weir, Moore said she had received many complaints of serious harassment against him, but there is no suggestion she acted on them by telling the leader, whip, administrator or, insofar as is known, anyone. She said she feared being alone with Weir, yet took no steps to protect female staff who worked for the NDP caucus, contrary to the duty of employers to provide a safe workplace.

None of the “many” employees emerged, even though Moore presumably would have known who they were and how to find them. But neither that, nor Moore’s earlier shaky condemnation of the two Liberal MPs, deterred Singh from announcing to the nation two days after Moore sent her email that Weir was suspended from caucus and under investigation. He cited “concern expressed by one of our members” and mentioned his commitment to “safer workplaces.”

the point is that the government should have no hand in organizing debates.

The Liberals have nominated their Victoria candidate.

...Nikki Macdonald..The former Executive Director of Government Relations at the University of Victoria was nominated as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for Victoria on Wednesday...Macdonald is the daughter of longtime and legendary Liberal politician Donald Macdonald who served as a cabinet minister under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau...

Now this gets interesting.

Recall that Mainstreet’s poll showed less support for Collins (NDP at 19.3%) than for the Liberals who had yet to even field a candidate (20.8%). Kooy (Green) had 22.9% of support.

Nikki Macdonald is also step-sisters with Amanda Lang, current BNN Bloomberg anchor and former host of the Lang/O'Leary Exchange.

She should do well in Victoria. Will be interesting to see how this three way heat in Victoria ends up.

A 4% spread. This could be a fireworks display and one of the most watched ridings in BC, if not the west.

You’ve got the Greens poised to break through for the first time, the Liberals poised to reclaim a former stronghold, and the NDP on the brink of giving up a 15 year run.

Rankin was a shoe-in, though. I know there was some turbulence stemming from some prior work he had done but the electorate handed him 42.3%. The runner-up got 33%.

Let me get this straight--a veteran politician has a daughter named Nikki who builds her career in the capitol and then wants to run for office. They already did this story line in Season Two.

Here is my take on the SNC-L mess. Tell me if you disagree.

These giant Canadian corporations are dealing in a very competitive environment. Some of the countries they deal with are corrupt and in order for projects to run smoothly, wheels have to be greased. It seems SNC-L got in over their head and had to be rescued by the Feds.

Kicking Trudeau out is not the solution. This could have just as easily happened on the watch of a Conservative government. Maybe ten years from now Bombardier or some other too-big-to-fail corporation will find itself caught in a shady overseas mess and this time the Conservatives will have to find a way to quietly clean it up.

If we are truly outraged we must instead step back and re-examine the relationship between the government and Canada's big corporations and the risks they take and to what degree we want to take responsibility for their mistakes.
