Ya, what nonsense.  Lucas going seems like a conflict of interest too.

Looks like at least 3 of the 7 "local companies" accompanying her are actually immigration consultants.

Doesn't look like Alacrity, who went last year and was the local company that invested in U-bicycle, is going again.

Remember when helps protested trump with a sign about "trump's empire" but apparently she has no problem with China

Mayor Helps and her crew are off on another junket trip to China and Japan. She continues to promote U-bicycle, the company with the recent SFU grad CEO and Victoria investment backing, as her example of Chinese investment in Victoria and justification for another trip.

I think it could be good value for the people Victoria to have Ms. Helps go to China.
That depends of course if she decides to stay .

China's human rights record doesn't include misogynists and that's much more important than something silly like oppression, lack of democracy, organ harvesting, freedom of religion etc.....plus you don't get to wear a pussy hat protesting China

I know this is an important trade mission.  I'd love to see how many spouses/partners go though.

https://www.vicnews....to-china-japan/

The following letter to the editor was published in the Times-Colonist newspaper on September 18, 2012:

Re: "Local delegation planning Asia trip," Sept 15.

Victoria's mayor and city manager are planning a trip to China in October to "strengthen economic and educational ties." They've applied to the province to fund travel costs.

In 2010, the province paid for the cost of flights. Who paid for the rest in 2010? Was it Victoria taxpayers?

If anyone goes to China, it should be the Greater Victoria Development Agency - that's its job. In the meantime, the City of Victoria and its politicians and officials should be focused on building the local economy.

I had an email from a landlord on upper Fort Street wondering what the city could do to create a better business climate for her tenants. If we want to attract investment from China or elsewhere, let's put the City of Victoria's energy - and taxpayers dollars - into making Victoria a business destination, not a city of increasingly vacant storefronts.

So, how about a trade delegation to upper Fort?

^^ Just another item to add to the long list of hypocritical positions that the Mayor has taken.

She's playing to her audience....My money is odds on she's running for Mayor next year

She will say yes in January and Isitt will not run against her.

I am still of the opinion that she is running for the Liberals as Mayor is to small a job for her. I think the reason why she is not wanting VHF to run his series and waiting until Jan is that she wants to get through the vetting process and get the nod from the party before she announces her intent.

There are all sorts of rumours on the street right now about the feds announcing several major projects on the Island over the next few months. I think that they are using that along with their candidate alignment to try and pick up several seats in 2019. They could be viewing this as an opportunity to cinch a second term for Trudeau.

With all the tea parties it wouldn't surprise me if VHF is running the campaign.

I expect the feds to announce some money for the E&N tracks upgrade.

Well she replied via facebook earlier today so she was prepared.

Standard Mayor Helps, deflect and redirect. According to the Mayor, all of our problems have been solved so her prior comments aren't applicable.

I also like her comment about taxpayers only being on the hook for $28K. Who is paying for the folks from UVIC, Camosun, the SIPP and Tourism? I realize that some of those costs are funded by business but they all get a hefty cheque from taxpayers as well. She stated that there are 40-50 people going on this trip yet from the list she provided only 5 are local business people with a product or service to sell overseas.

I'm pretty sure her skill set is well below the standard for the job she is doing now, although here resume is as thick as Trudeau's.

Funny thing about doing business in Asia: anyone who promulgates the notion of some sort of "instant return" after one trip to the Orient is either naive or, I would suggest, possibly doesn't have a good grasp on how business, particularly international business, actually works.

A dozen plus year's ago I worked for a local, very successful and well known (locally, nationally and globally) software company whose Sales team made regular, annual trips to Asia, to Taiwan, China and Japan specifically.

After many, many, many such trips spread over a half dozen years++, the first very tentative reciprocal deal was finally struck - with barely if any any margin or semblance of profit left for our firm, which of course is the Asian strategy. Agree to meet, talk, meet again, talk some more, have some tea, smile a lot. Rinse, repeat. Again and again. Meet some more, keep talking. Eventually the suitor - desperate to get any deal done - finally gets to a point where they will literally sign anything simply to be seen to achieve something to break the ice.

In our extensive experience back in the day only after many years of this "relationship-building", did either of China or Japan typically sign anything. As our sales director said after one of the early junkets to Shanghai, "J***s C****t, it's like being eaten alive by a duck!!". Meaning they nip and nibble and peck away, very very slowly, very deliberately and only finally commit to something after a very deep level of trust is established - and they always made certain, at least in our industry (tech), to sign a deal whereby the scales were tipped in their favor. Always.

So a notion that a 'one and done' quickie trip is going to somehow magically result in some tangible, measurable financial windfall on this side of the pond in 6 months, or a year, or even two, is I would suggest fanciful at best. Delusional at worst. It typically would require several repeated such trips - literally years' worth, involving presumably bucket-loads of taxpayer dollars - in order for anything substantive to possibly emerge benefiting BC or Victoria.

Maybe we can strike a deal with the Triads to provide an endless supply of street drugs to our local addicts for free so they stop breaking into cars and stealing bikes for drug money.
