We hardly use Lisa Helps' composting can, lol. The mess is disgusting and makes me retch, and this with the stuff inside of expensive "plastic" compostable bags. The rats around here are unreal and gotten worse. The only things I toss in are a few vegetable peelings. The small composting bucket sent out to residents was useless too, the shape is all wrong. We don't use it. Too bad we had to pay for it.

The Times Colonist article that is linked above is a must read. Perhaps our civilization will take notice once it becomes socially shameful to harass anyone for any kind of aggressive behavior. The bullies of the world need to be stood up to.

The women that shared their stories in the article are brave souls. I saw my eldest daughter post a # me too on her facebook page. That's not right. Thank you Lisa.

I don't disagree with you but like most things, the message is becoming diluted by people who are using the situation to further their own personal agenda or who feel that they have to post something to show their relevance to their fan/supporter(s).

I think that everyone can get behind the fact that sexual assault, sexual harassment and/or bullying are wrong and must be stopped. Unwanted advances though? If someone asks you out and you aren't attracted to them then that makes them a sexual predator or deviant?

What always happens is that the message soon gets lost as more and more people read some of the stories and discount their seriousness or merits. It is a shame that 2 months from now we will have all forgotten about #metoo as a result.

Re-read the TC article Rob. And compare the stories. They quite frankly should not all be lumped together.

The same planet that swoons over Prime Minister Trudeau when he so much as glances at a camera?

I wasn't just referring to the TC article.

If you take an even cursory look at social media now, everything from looking at someone the wrong way to rape is sexual assault. I am not discounting the seriousness of many of the stories, just pointing out that by including trivial accounts the message is being diluted to the point that it will be dismissed.

Maybe the point is that all sexual assault and all sexual harassment is wrong? I've never seen that this campaign is focusing on serious assaults and rape.

This exboyfriend of Lisa's was wrong.

Sure it is wrong, we just need to have a common definition of what it is.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? Words matter, definitions matter, and it's especially important when we are talking about potential crimes. The whole wildly expanding definitions of these issues is why we have American college kids saying their professors correcting their grammar and spelling is racism

Well she replied via facebook earlier today so she was prepared.

Standard Mayor Helps, deflect and redirect. According to the Mayor, all of our problems have been solved so her prior comments aren't applicable.

I also like her comment about taxpayers only being on the hook for $28K. Who is paying for the folks from UVIC, Camosun, the SIPP and Tourism? I realize that some of those costs are funded by business but they all get a hefty cheque from taxpayers as well. She stated that there are 40-50 people going on this trip yet from the list she provided only 5 are local business people with a product or service to sell overseas.

I've been doing some searching on Google. It seems like there are hundreds of these mayoral trips to China, if not thousands.

Some cities have had the entire trip paid for by third parties, at no cost to taxpayers:

The trip was organized by China Silicon Valley, a non-profit organization committed to promoting investment and business communication and cooperation between China and Silicon Valley. It was financed with the support of the local Chinese government in Chengdu. The trip was pre-approved by the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), and resulted in no cost to the City of Brisbane or Brisbane Chamber of Commerce.

The first Kingston mayor to make an international trip in over 30 years didn’t come home empty-handed.

Mayor Bryan Paterson led a municipal delegation on a weeklong visit to China to tour the facilities owned by Feihe International, a Chinese company that recently announced a $225 million investment in Kingston.

“Together we met with company officials to enhance our relationship with Feihe and made important business and political connections,” said Mayor Paterson upon his return.

Good stuff, David.

I’m still perplexed how Helps could so easily push aside her harsh criticism of Fortin’s Chinese visit (which she voiced via an op-ed to the TC, which David brought to our attention) while promoting her own trips are a necessary and a sound investment.

Helps criticized Fortin for going to China when the local economy was suffering (which would logically be viewed as an opportune time to travel abroad to promote a region) and says her trips are necessary because the city is doing well ...therefore it’s a great time to promote the region.

I'm just surprised at her lack of concern for human rights and social justice considering how vocal she is with the US yet strangely silent on China....is this selective activism?

Something to keep in mind if the city ever decides to run a program that matches landlords with homeless people looking for shelter.

"Nitin Mehra thought he was doing a good deed.

The Ottawa man, 32, agreed to join a city-funded program that matches private landlords with homeless people who need a permanent place to live.
Seven months later, his unit is trashed and crawling with maggots. When you walk in the door, you're hit with the stench of rotting food and feces. The unit's buzzing with dozens of flies, covered in half-eaten perishables and littered in piles of knee-deep garbage.
"It's a botched program," says Mehra. "The city's heart was in the right place, but they just did not execute it well at all."
Mehra says the program was supposed to provide tenant support services, which include counselling and weekly visits. None of that happened, says Mehra. He faces thousands of dollars in damages and has evicted the tenant, who is now homeless again."

Well as you know that is pretty standard stuff from essentially any Left(ish) party or politician in this country - the default starting position re: the US on essentially any subject = They're Baaaaad!....

Conversely - naturally - whenever any of <feel free to insert Russia/Soviet Union, Communist China, Cuba etc.,> engage(d) in the same or worse behavior, why they = ''our philosophical kin'' so we'll just pretend all that fluffy pish-posh that Marx wrote about the proletariat rising to the top amid the triumph of "(cough) democratic (cough) socialism" in those places actually - you  know - happens. Just ignore the gulags, the summary trials and executions, the heavy handed secret police dragging people off in the middle of the night, never to be seen again etc etc etc....they're all American fabrications naturally...!

I don't think any municipal/Provincial politician of any left/right ideology goes to China to put a turd in the punch bowl. Usually it's left to the feds to push those buttons.

Quite true as a very general rule; and yet you don't have to look very hard to find plenty of examples of those same municipal/politicians take a swipe at the US whenever and wherever it suits them particularly if they think it will play well with their constituents.

Isitt is a beauty - including this quote from a 2016 Victoria News article in response to "what is your biggest pet peeve?"

Response: "Capitalist exploitation of people and the planet."  Of course. Guy is consistent if nothing else....

http://www.vicnews.c...llor-ben-isitt/

Pretty much a given you can interchangeably insert the US for "Capitalism" and you get the broader picture.

What I can't figure out is why he and others of that ilk don't move to the People's Paradise of - oh I dunno - North Korea in that case. Could it be because it sucks royal donkey b***s? Ditto for Venezuela or Cuba. Oh and all those places and other repressive regimes have this troubling predilection for jailing and/or executing outspoken journalists and politicians for expressing opinions that deviate from the Party Line. So just maybe this capitalist society, for all its warts and faults, ain't so bad....
