It’s a sad fact: although people who rent in Victoria outnumber homeowners by a two-to-one margin, it is homeowners who overwhelmingly determine the outcome of city elections for Mayor and Council.

Why don’t people who rent, vote? Is it because they don’t care who runs the city? Or is it perhaps because they believe that, unlike homeowners or business owners, they don’t pay property taxes, or water or sewer utility charges, so what do they really need City Hall for anyway?

Well if that’s the case, better sit down renters, because you’re in for a nasty round of “truth and consequences”.

Here's something I didn't know... the City charges an $11 licencing fee for each washer and dryer in the building.  It's annual so it's not much, but still an odd charge.

I wonder how much revenue is made off of that

Probably costs more to administer than it brings in.

Whatever justified that particular stupidity?

^ I always thought the British television licensing fee was silly but at least it has a justification (pay for the BBC). Why tax washers and dryers and not ovens or refrigerators?

You could raise that at the next city council meeting.  I'm sure they'll get right on it.
