As a Victoria City Councillor I intend to introduce and vote for by-laws that will increase the density in the downtown core, improve safety throughout the city but especially in the tourist zone, get the homeless off the streets.
You know, when I first heard of Riga I really wanted to like her. Looking at her old 1999 website there seemed to be a lot of potential: ex-military, First Nations, mom, community volunteer--all great ingredients for a councillor.
Unfortunately, any time her name is mentioned or she opens her mouth I get more disappointed. The above quote is the only clue to her platform and it shows a shocking lack of understanding about what a bylaw can and cannot do. What kind of bylaw gets the homeless off the street? What are you supposed to do, threaten them with a fine?
She even screwed herself out of some automatic votes by registering as R. Godron instead of Riga Godron.

I don't think that she is a former member of the military, what I have heard is that she was involved with some sort of aboriginal cadets program or something.

Just got home from the debate. Complete gong show. I thought Riga and Shebib were going to get into a fist fight for a minute.

Was the whole thing on TV anywhere or online? I'd like to see it.

This poor woman needs help. Perhaps through this public exposure the right sort of assistance will be made available to her.

Nah, not showing anything. Surely these have to be available somewhere. Were there any TV cameras there?

More Riga
That's terrible. Is there anything that can disqualify someone from the race? I know everyone has the right at a shot, but there's a point that it's just disruptive with no reasonable expectation of winning.

My blood pressure was a mile high walking out of that room, and I wasn't even a candidate

I looked her up in the old TC archives. There were a couple of articles from the late 90s detailing her terrible teen years and how she triumphed over adversity to become a positive, cheerful, educated young woman with a bright future. The TC's Jim Gibson put her together in the same sentence with Rob Fleming as young people with a promising political future ahead of them.

Where was security, or the men with the white coats.

There was none. After about the third outburst, and certainly after swearing, I though she had lost the right to be on stage. But Gregor probably played it smart, there was nobody in any position to escort her off, no security present. Killing her mike would not have helped, she can yell.

I'm not kidding when I say that I feared for the personal safety of some candidates (primarily Stephen) and the audience itself. There should absolutely be security at these types of events, particularly the ones that take place at place like that

You know, by all means something could have got out of hand, but I'm not convinced a room full of mostly reasonable adults could not have dealt with it just as well as any "trained" security guard. I don't think rent-a-cops are much good for anything.
