One soldier confirmed shot this morning guarding the National War Memorial of all things; the security detail got all the main party leaders out of harm's way but there remains lots of confusion understandably:

Thanks a lot Stephen Harper from turning what used to be a fairly peaceful country that kept it nose out of others' business to a country where its citizens now need to worry about getting slaughtered in their own towns by people who have taken up the cause of the  terrorists who have now marked this country in their gun sights.

You remind of a George W Bush

Hope you sleep well tonight Steve.

A timeline so far, from the National Post’s Sarah Boesveld:
9:53 a.m. Gunfire at the National War Memorial. Reporter there said said he saw one man go down and another run. He heard four shots.
9:54 a.m. Gunfire in Parliament’s Centre Block.
9:56 a.m. Reports of dozens of shots fired in Parliament. A reporter sees a motionless body on the ground outside the Library of Parliament. Meanwhile, at the War Memorial, reports emerge that it is a soldier that was shot.
9:58 a.m. CPR being performed on the soldier by passersby.
9:59 a.m. Confirmed that “active shooter” still in the halls of Parliament.
10:00 a.m. Ottawa police tactical unit arrives at Parliament Hill.
10:04 a.m. Witnesses at war memorial say they saw the assailant run towards Parliament Hill carrying a large rifle.
10:05 a.m. A police officer at war memorial confirms to colleague in walkie talkie: “DND member down.” Officers shout “there is a shooter on the loose” and clears the area.

Friend at the base says they haven't been briefed yet but heightened security is to be expected.

Her contacts in Ottawa are saying that they are not allowed to wear military garb or uniforms outside of any facility.

The Globe and Mail is reporting witnesses stating that at least one of the suspects appears to be aboriginal. At this point I would be hesitant to jump to the conclusion that this was a terrorist attack unless we want to consider domestic terrorism by other groups.

Some sources saying there may have been two shooters. One shooter has been killed inside Parliament.

The PM and Opposition leaders are reportedly safe. Sounds like lots of MPs were/are on the hill.

That's utter BS and irrelevant.....We are not isolationists....we do not stand by while innocents are stoned to death, crucified or beheaded.....we do not hug terrorists or psychopaths......and we are not dictated to by fear or threats

Don't forget, nothing bad ever happened in the past. All the bad things are happening now.

This is not the time nor the place. The NY Times is reporting that the solider shot at the National War Memorial has died. He was reportedly unresponsive and being treated by civilian bystanders, including CPR, before an ambulance arrived. RIP and I hope nobody else was hurt (except for the shooter(s)).

Very sad. CBC was showing video of paramedics performing CPR on him earlier this morning. I thought that was pretty disrespectful.

CBC is saying two victims are in hospital with non life threatening condition. Obviously massively conflicting reports.

You can't honestly be serious. Canada and the UN were quite happy to do nothing when hundreds of thousands were killed in Rwanda. The Khymer Rouge killed 1.7M in Cambodia. For good measure you could also add in genocides in Bosnia and the Sudan in recent years as well.

Is it??

Canada was threatened directly a couple weeks back and now it is happening. How can that be utter BS. Its happening now and this may only be the beginning.Welcome to the new Canada.

The Canadian Flag is worn by travellers and even Americans on their suitcases and bags when travelling internationally because we were not targeted will that change now??

We know nothing about the motives.

Before going off on tangents lets wait for information to be released. Arguing about what has happened before we know anything serves no purpose.

I've seen some reports now that the soldier is still alive.

Reporting now that it was Parliament's Sergeant at Arms (Kevin Vickers) who took out the shooter. Reports of a second shooter are still out there.

^^ Watching video like that always brings a lump to my throat as I watch officers move towards the sound of gunfire. I can think of nothing braver than walking towards danger like that on our behalf.

Video Sound like Automatic Fire

Sounded like a shotgun blast and then 20 police officers unloading their revolvers.
