Municipal Election: 2014 / BLACK PRESS

The City of Victoria is months away from applying for a supervised drug consumption site in the downtown core,  says Coun. Marianne Alto.

Alto made the announcement at an all-candidates meeting discussing homelessness, housing and poverty. The meeting, held Thursday at the Downtown Community Centre, was sponsored by three social services agencies.

Alto expects the city to make an application within six months, followed by about year of advocacy and organization.

No site has been chosen.

Don't they have to apply to the Feds for some type of criminal code exemption?

This government is unlikely to grant it.

Feds would be happy to close the Vancouver one.

Here we go again Victoria thinking its a huge city when in Fcat many communities in this province woudl love to have the injection site too .

Prince George is one.

What makes Victoria so special.

Last night I drove along Pandora when Our Place was closed and did not see a single person on the street

I wish these candidates got out of thier little cubicles and talked about ideas that would make this city a better place instead of all jumping on the same bandwagon its so boring and predictable

Ya sure but not 24 7 its only at certain times of the day.

Vancouver has the problem

the only time the Victoria scene is a problem is  during 9-5 when teh downtown is full when they roll up the sidewalks each day at 545pm the problem is gone

Van has a large problem for sure. Strange how we all adapt though. I have friends that have a migratory route through hastings and main. Cruzing through the zombies one day pushing the stroller and one called out "baby" and they all made way for her...

It's time other munis pulled their weight. Oak Bay would be perfect for a safe injection site.

I just got my flu shot at the Pharmasave in the OB Village, and its safe if you can avoid walker gridlock in the dispensary.

that is so true. I have no issue at all walking through that maze of sidewalk flee markets and drug smoking and homeless and neither do the hundreds of tourists from the cruise ships who while wandering away from Gastown end up in the centre of it all

Victoria and Vancouver both have issues as do many other cities in BC but the Victoria Vancouver problem is like comparing the Luxton Fair to Disneyland

As I have said many times in the past Victoria is and will continue to be a small town with a big ego

Prince George and Victoria are similar in size and population

Change is always possible as a town cannot have an ego, only the people can have that.

Yes both cities are about 75,000 in population however PG is not contiguously connected to a half dozen other cities. Why do you think there are calls for amalgamation? One big issue is we are actually a city of 350,000 can only qualify as a city of 75,000....

It is only contiguously connected to Esquimalt Oak Bay and Saanich not a half dozen others.

There are only a small amount of people in the big picture who are calling for amalgamation .

We Victoria is not a city of 350k that is an undeniable fact .

You are obviously pro amalgamation I can see that with your support of anyone who talks pro amalgamation but it doesnt mean all others are of teh same view.

Oak Bay does Not want to amalgamate with Victoria and neither does Saanich so that only leaves a slim chance of Esquimalt.

Claiming we are a big happy family of 350k is false advertising.

My self and probably every other citizen in my community would never want to be part of Victoria ..Metchosin woudl never...see your argument is falling apart.

Its Ok that you have your beliefs and desires Im not knowcking that its good to dream but not all of your audience is in favour.

Perhaps you need to start your own forum HB as this one is called "Vibrant VICTORIA" not "Mediocre Metchosin" or "Obtuse Oak Bay"....there I said it.

No, your denial of reality is awe-inspiring. Drug users from all over the region come to downtown to buy, use, beg, and socialise. To deny this is an issue that requires cooperation amongst all local governments in the region because you dislike amalgamation is ridiculous.

^ I believe the intent of this forum is not for City of Victoria residents only. Its for greater Victoria.

HB - sentiment on VV seems to lean more towards exploring amalgamation at the very least. That means doing the research necessary and making the best decision based on evidence. A broad sweeping statement that Oak Bay and Saanich won't support amalgamation is just your opinion based on anecdotal comments.

MY opinion is that Oak Bay and Saanich residents would be happy for a indepth study of the pros, cons, costs, and how of amalgamation in the CRD from each municipality and the CRD's perspective.

TL;DR: Why just say no when you don't actually know what the result of amalgamation would be, shouldn't we find out?
