It's like the massive rise in disability payment receivers in the US. You make it too easy to qualify and everyone will claim it...

The Tea Party called; they want their philosophy back.

Has anyone seen this electronic food calendar at 749 Pandora (Cool Aid Society offices)? It spells out where and when you can access free food.

The Our Place director was on CFAX the other day.

He said they have some working poor coming there.  He says "they come for breakfast, get a (free) bus ticket, head to work, then we see them again for dinner".

Something tells me that a lot of people use the system and they don't need to.

But isn't that the same as me(or you) taking your taxes to an accountant to minimize the amount that you pay out? We are (to an extent) gaming the system so as to take more home with us.
If it were Joe Middleclass, shaving away at his budget so as to afford a Mexican vacation, then I'd have a problem with that (as a donor to Our Place.) If someone is having to make the choice between eating, making rent, or walking to work, and they go there, then that's what the system is designed for, methinks.

Besides, it's not as if it's a 5 star restaurant!

No, that's not the same. An accountant doesn't game the system, an accountant identifies opportunities created by the government. If you don't know about them, the government doesn't care and essentially games you. If you do have a reputable and knowledgeable accountant, good for you.

You'd be surprised how many people game social services. I've come across folks over the years that I still shake my head at.

I'm not understanding your useage of 'game' here.  The way you've presented this post, you are having a different reaction to the well-off and the ne'r-do-wells performing the exact same actions.

Or is it somehow a bad thing that someone who can't afford an accountant has knowledge of what social services the government offers and the associated opportunities created?

OR they are working and poor.

The needy can't get a break. They don't work and use services people say: "Get a job! Bums!"

They have a job and still need to use services, they're scamming the system.

My usage of game is the same as North Shore's usage of game.

There is a huge population of working poor in Victoria, who either couch-surf or have very short-term rentals. All it takes is on minor financial issue and they are out, which means that climbing back out is really really hard. Also very expensive for both them and society if they actually become homeless. So if the working poor are getting a solid meal at Our Place, that is probably the cheapest thing we can do to keep them in the workforce (for both their health and societies).

Ah, the ever popular Ayn Rand-inspired hate for those who dare to be poor. Let us demonize and falsely accuse!

It gives us such hits as:

"Voter fraud is rampant" - if you mean that voting against Republicans/Harper-Torys is "fraud".

"Welfare bums should just work harder" - and not expect that they should be able to feed clothe or house themselves or their families on minimum wage.

"Drugs addicts are criminals" - because we all "know" that addiction is criminal behaviour not a health issue.

Etc, etc.

You make an accusation and smear every single person seeking assistance with the same brush yet you cannot provide any actual evidence. And what exactly are your criteria for "don't need it"? Oh wait, I can guess, anyone without a begging licence issued by the parish perhaps? Sorry we don't live in 1640 anymore.

Victoria can send its users to any of those sites I suppose.

From Facebook yesterday:

Went for my walk in Quadra Village today. The rumour (grapevine is hot today) has it that CRHD/Beacon services is proposing a Safe Injection Site in the old Blanshard School, part of which is occupied by CDI College. Cannot and should not be even considered when it is directly across the street from a children's playground that is sooo busy, the Community Centre, all the Families at Evergreen Court and the soon to be Seniors Care Facility. Not to mention that SJ Willis is being considered to be used for Jr/Sr high school students displaced from other schools when they are having seismic upgrading done. I remember oh so well the demise of Park Street with the needle exchange. OMG!!!!!!!!! Downtown Vic, have you any way to find out if this is so. It would not be any good for me to talk to our Neighbourhood Liason for many, many apparent reasons

I was walking along Douglas near Yates and I felt a couple of droplets hit my face and I thought, damn I almost got smoked by a seagull until I realized the addict lying against a building was flushing out his needle with water.

The black awnings on the building at the corner of Herald and Government that Trevor Linden built look like that, which is really unfortunate.
