There was a news item on CTV VI tonight about the moving of the building.

Five rental units in Victoria will be barged to Port Townsend, Wash. next week where they will become affordable housing...Urban Core Ventures says it’s donated the structure, rather than demolishing it. “We’ve donated it recently to a non-profit out of Port Townsend…they provide low income families with housing,” said Lindsay Shojania...the company initially tried to keep the property in Victoria.“There wasn’t quite the right piece of property that would be suited to it, but we made effort for the last few years to do this,”...

Nice to see us helping WA state's homeless out.

Were any parts of the CRD willing to donate land and turn this building into a homeless shelter? The CoV has more than done its fair share. Saanich has lots of land, did they step up to the table?

Sounds like Port Townsend was able to move quickly to capitalize on the opportunity.  Finding a location here available and willing to take the building would have taken years and involved studies to make sure that views of the power poles were not impacted.

"Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said she is “very disappointed” and “baffled” that the building is headed out of the capital region. In the future, the city should consider a rezoning condition where if a building is being moved, it must be within the capital region.."

What a glass half empty view.  The win here is that the building was put to good use and kept out of the landfill.

I would imagine if this condition had been put on the rezoning the building likely would have been demolished and then no one would have benefited.

Like I said before, methinks it would be more effective to offer incentives to keep relocated buildings in Victoria. It seems like the focus is always on prohibition and punishments instead of on encouragement and incentives.

HB was able to confirm additional details for the move.

It will take place at 9PM on Tuesday. The movers will make their way to an offloading point along Dallas Road quite possibly at the ramp at Clover Point.

Know it all.

Exactly. Instead of asking why the developers chose to move the building to the States, ask what prevented them from keeping it here. As NP said, if the requirement had existed the building would just have been demolished.

The developer isn't moving it. Nickel Bros is. Developer pays them a small amount and they then sell the building on the open market....

Cheaper and faster than building new.... it's a great idea for lower income housing. Way better that a cheap toxic box.... What's to understand. This is the free market at work. Nickel Bros is both doing a service and making money recycling houses and buildings. I say bravo!

See if you can find the TV show "Massive Moves". It specializes in the challenges of moving houses.
