Should Government Street become a pedestrian boulevard?

Not Government Street, but on the subject of new patios, Sherwood Cafe is building a new one outside 1515 Douglas.

Was talking with a shop owner who was having a contractor build a nice little patio for him on the street the other day. He quite proudly told me the City was paying for it! Apparently the deal is that the City covers the costs and then the shop owner has the option of leasing it come November.
According to Helps it is ‘illegal’ to provide financial support to businesses which is why there is nothing they can do for businesses being robbed blind in Burnside-Gorge. Apparently though it is ok to provide patios for her donors and friends.
I don't believe the City is paying for the construction of his patio. He might have that misunderstood. The permits for the patios are gratis for this summer.

Could be that the owner was not telling me the truth.

I would say 99% of the cyclists don't dismount in the pedestrian only zone on government street. I make it a point to tell every cycylist I see there that they are supposed to dismount. If I am not allowed to drive my car up there, they should get their butts off that bike for that one section.
I hope you will join me in this new tradition. I might even bring my saxaphone and play for you.

I make a point of not dismounting at all. Take that!

that they are supposed to dismount.
Are they though? Has the city come out and said that?

There is a sign mandating cyclists dismount between Fort and View.
But like most "rules" for cyclists, that's just a suggestion.

If I'm meandering at a pace that isn't a threat to the safety of anyone around me, I don't see the harm.

Yeah, no one cares except for the faux outrage against all thing cycling crowd.

So cars travelling slowly through the same space shouldn't be a problem then either.

Sure, if the car is the same size as a bike, and as long as they can fix the problem of an accidental acceleration killing someone.

As long as the cars stay on the road and the pedestrians on the sidewalk it's all good. It works pretty much everywhere. No signs needed.

I saw Lisa Helps on TV telling a cyclist to dismount, so take it up with her

The by-law requires cyclists to dismount, and yet we have a couple of cyclists above (one of whom I regularly agree with!) who feel that (as cyclists) by-laws simply don't apply to them if they ride "at a meandering pace".
And cyclists wonder why they are so profoundly disliked by a healthy swath of the local population?
Cyclists in Victoria really do need to do a serious clean-up on their act, especially in light of all the money and transportation real estate that is currently either already dedicated, or on the verge of being dedicated to the needs of those cyclists.
Perhaps some of the pro-cycling folks here on the forum could report back to this thread as to why by-laws that apply city wide don't actually apply to them?
