Helena MT has an interesting pedestrian only street. In a place with real winters. I’m really not opposed to doing something like that here. But do it all and do it right.

Halifax has a nice ped street as well, bollards that go up and down, nice stroll and pedestrian friendly.

It does? Is it new? I didn’t see one there when I visited. Lots of freeways in that region, though.

Personally I really dont care what they do with government street since we have virtually stopped going downtown or spending any money there. But they need to give some real thought to policing the area.

You mean adding a public plaza next to Centennial Square won't lure you back downtown?

Government St. was plenty crowded today but then so was all downtown, Deuce Days was more crowded than I had ever seen it.

Deuce Days is a great draw for Victoria's tourist sector. Any other great ideas to draw more solid tourism here?

Ironic that a car-related event draws so many people in a city that is actively waging a war on motorized vehicles.

2019. The road wasn’t closed this day clearly, but for events and markets etc etc.

Surprised how dark it was for July. Don’t remember time of day.

We had a walk around yesterday to look at the cars and walked back along Government. I really don't care any longer as I now vote with my dollars and none are being spent down there, as they used to be at Murchies and Munroes. I am curious, however, as to why on Broad St. there are wooden cow corrals outside of shops that don't appear to be restaurants. What's going on here? Also because the street can no longer accommodate a street sweeper, the gutter is full of weeds. The whole area looks unkempt.

These places. The only way in to the shops is through a walkway and you can't look in any of the windows due to wooden fences.

There is (and has been) an issue with the underground vaults there.  There needs to be some work there as eventually there is potential for problems.

Many of those poorly built cattle containers are a blight on the downtown streetscape. In addition, a fair number of them never seem to be used. I am not sure why the CoV felt the need to extend their existence.

mbjj was talking about the wooden structures along the 1000 block of Broad that stop people from walking on the sidewalk but still allow access to store fronts.  As for all the unused 'patios' yeah it's terrible they have been left out there.  Summer hasn't been all that great by this point, but yeah hard to see the value in them right now.

The expanded pedestrian space on Government Street really comes into its own this time of year.

Deadsville down on Government, 7PM, Friday night, dry as a bone, height of the Christmas shopping season one week before Christmas.

I was wrong in another post about there not being any Christmas lights. The City installed these blue light strings to celebrate the season (or are they there all year? I dunno).

Here’s Broad Street between Broughton and Fort. Same time as above.

I see the cattle corrals are being put to good use as well.

That’s because you’re not seeing them during the annual exhibition and cattle show.

Is that when they’ll put up the Christmas decorations?

Note that both Government and Broad have those lights year-round. There’s no hint of Christmas there, at all.

On some lamp standards the City put up little trees with blue lights. And they’re not on every standard. I can only see two in this photo, none across the street towards Shoppers. This is the main drag, and its main intersection at Yates.
