To be fair, we were already partially funding political parties in the form of tax credits.

Yes but ..

The NDP received an average of $1.4M a year from unions between 2005 and 2015. They will be receiving $2M a year under their new proposal. The NDP will net out ahead while the Liberals will lose about $6M a year.

Not sure what your source is.

This year from January to mid May, the NDP raised about 3.8 million from unions. Election year, so the numbers are higher, of course.

The liberals raised about 4.7 million from corporations in the same period.

Both lose money in election years when looking at that.

You can't just pick an election year as you say, you have to average over a longer period.

Yeah, but I still want to see your source. I'm surprised if the Liberals are pulling in 6 million a year in corporate donations.

Ok, something is wrong here. My source has 3.8 million from unions to the NDP in 6 months, including 1 election. Yours has just under 14 million over 15 years, which includes 2 or 3 elections.

The NDP also got another 930000 from corporations and 2.1 million from estates over those 10 years, so 17 million over 15 years that will be banned.

The article does not say how much the liberals got in corporate donations, which is what I'm interested in. There is a linked article though that gives some of the picture: 30.6 million from the top 50 over 2005 to March 2017. Not sure what the full corporate donations total is, but that works out to under 2 million per year from corporations.

This change does level the playing field, but not as much as you stated. The game changer is for the Green party.

I don't understand the unions supporting the NDP anymore. They used to be the party of the laborer but with their penchant for shutting down every money making enterprise in the province it is more like they are the party of the permanently vexed left wing nut jobs.

They are still the party of the public service labour.

Dianne Watts going to run for leader of the Liberal party. This is great news. All the other candidates might as well stay home, she should sweep it.

Here's some older background on her.

After this article, she won her third mayor term with 80% of the vote.

NDP to conduct sweeping review of crown corporations to make sure they can be economically viable well into the future.  Gee, since they are all (liquor, lottery, ICBC etc.) monopolies, I think you will be fine.

So far,

  • Mike Bernier
  • Mike de Jong
  • Michael Lee
  • Lucy Sager
  • Sam Sullivan
  • Dianne Watts
  • Andrew Wilkinson

Have all entered the race so far. A decent field so far, but I hope it doesn't grow into a crowded field of 10+ candidates.

I really like de Jong, but I don't think it would be healthy for the party going forward, if we want to win the next election.

de Jong strikes me as the kind of politician who probably should be in charge, but I don’t know if he has that electability. I want to see some of that fire from him in the leadership campaign that he showed early on in his career.

Regarding the others, man, this race will not lack experience, that’s for sure. de Jong, Watts, Wilkinson and Sullivan all have loads of political experience.

Don't worry, soon all will be well because we'll be able to add Marijuana BC to the list of poorly run BC crown corps that provide horrible service at an outrageous cost.
