...just trying to figure out what the heck "brown" NDP means!

I assumed it was a term to distinguish those NDP members who aren't especially green.

The timing of Weaver’s colour change is even more peculiar now.

I've never heard the term brown NDP. Can you elaborate, John?

"Brown" being in opposite to "Green" I suppose. As in, he is much more connected to the old-school, populist labour-union wing of the party, and is less concerned about environmental issues than some in the party.

Can we just agree on the term "NDP Classic", maybe?

Minimum seats required for official party status - so what now?

Legislative Assembly of British Columbia

4 seats, although the current BC Greens caucus of 3 MLAs has been granted Official Party status with reduced funding.[3]

B.C. Greens achieves party status, but it comes with less funding

The Greens should no longer have official party status and their funding should be reduced.

Left them high & dry? No funding? Why would he toss them to the wolves like that?  No longer agrees with 'them'?  Angry move?

If eligibility for funding has dropped from 3 to 2 surely it has to go through a public process?  One would expect the media to report on this?

The recognition of caucuses in the BC Legislature is a rule decided on by a majority vote of the legislature.   It had been 4 for many years, but the current legislature voted to reduce the number needed to be a caucus though I can not remember if it was lowered to 2 or 3

Might as well lower it to 1 and then any person elected, even as an independent, can apply for caucus funding.

From the news article link above - 2017

"Gaining official party status was a must-have in the Green’s agreement to prop up the minority NDP government. “This is about recognizing the fact that when two people get elected under the party banner, they are acknowledged,” Olsen said."

I donno, I think it's about this too?

"...Greens receive $175,000 annually per MLA..."

Each MLA also gets the standard MLA salary of $106,000 each per year, for a total of $849,000 annually.

"...The change means each MLA can look forward to a raise.

Andrew Weaver would receive a 25 per cent boost, or $26,470, as party leader, while Sonia Furstenau and Olsen would each receive an extra 10 per cent, or $10,588, as house leader and party whip.

Party status also means a caucus budget: $87,500 for each member to support office operations, plus $25,000 for caucus capital expenses.

Between salaries and the caucus budget, that’s a total of about $653,000.

One extra variable is new office space: If Weaver decides he wants a secondary Vancouver office, he’s entitled to funding to cover a 570-square-foot office lease."

In 1996 there was some discussion by members of the government at the time to do that to all Gordon Wilson have party status as the only elected member of the PDA

I hope this turns out well for Mr. Weaver and his family and wish him and his family well.   https://www.thecanad...e/andrew-weaver

Mike Smyth: Andrew Weaver explains why he left the Green party caucus

He asked me not to go into detail about the family situation, and I will respect that. I can tell you this, though: It’s tearing him apart.

During a 25-minute interview, the former Green leader was at times emotional, choking back tears. The health crisis currently occupies his time all day, every day, at a Vancouver hospital.

So is someone about to announce their candidacy for the BC Green Party leadership?

Sonia Furstenau, one of the two remaining Green Party MLAs in the B.C. Legislature, will announce her plans for the future at a press conference Monday morning...Furstenau, the representative for Cowichan Valley, will announce her plans at 10 a.m. at an event in Victoria.

If not her, who else?   Adam Olsen cannot run for the leadership based on their rules.   I do not see Paul Manely stepping down as an MP to run for the BC Green leadership.   Anyone else running would have effectively no media presence

Why is this? Because he is interim leader?
