Yes I am well aware knowing several commerical fishermen both locally in Victoria and on the mainland. And I say - again - whether we're talking about commerical or sport fishing that anyone engaged in either should be well aware by now that environmental conditions are changing and they are changing fast. Salmon stocks everywhere are down generally, catastrophically so in many cases.

They are down because of changing climatic and marine conditions and because of ecosystem degradation largely due to human activities. This is not new nor should it be news to organizations like the PR Chamber. Its been ongoing and well documented for years, whether we're talking about steelhead or chinook or other salmonid populations that have literally crashed in the case of the Thompson River steelhead or the Fraser River where roughly half of its salmon populations are at risk due to overfishing and habitat loss. Chinook are also under duress from the repeated accidental introduction of salmon from hatcheries into wild populations. In freshwater specifically, the salmon are also impacted by the construction of dams and degradation of habitat due to human activities including poor logging practices.

Given all of the above if you continue to be a "one trick pony" town that has done little or nothing to mitigate these factors by making yourself less dependent on an industry that is clearly struggling with an uncertain future at best - frankly - I don't have a lot of sympathy for you.

The summer of 2022 is shaping up to be a bumper season for both pink and sockeye salmon in British Columbia rivers, with one veteran Indigenous fisherman reporting the biggest catches of sockeye in decades.

Mitch Dudoward has worked in the salmon industry for more than 40 years, and says fishing on the Skeena River in northwest B.C. has never been better.

“This is the best season I can recall in my lifetime with the numbers we are catching,” said Dudoward, who recently completed a big sockeye haul aboard his gillnetter Irenda.

Bob Chamberlin, chairman of the First Nations Wild Salmon Alliance, meanwhile said that thousands of pink salmon are in Central Coast rivers after years of minimal returns.

Pink and sockeye are not Chinook and therefore aren't really germaine to a conversation about increasing the Orca's feeding range since Chinook are their prime source of food.

The pink salmon cycle is well known especially to any serious rec fisherman and regardless of the fact their numbers have been excellent the last two times we went specifically for them, that does not mitigate nor remotely change the fact Chinook are in trouble for all the reasons I mentioned above. Just because the planet is warming overall does not mean occasionally we won't see a cold winter or get snow: in both examples the overall long term trends are pretty clear. In the case of salmonids downward population pressures from all sources have a very real impact and therefore need to be managed to the best of our ability. We ignore them at our peril.

It doesn’t matter what we do, when foreign trawlers off our coast can do whatever they want.

All we do, is hurt our own people, erode our own jobs and destroy communities under the guise we’ll solve problems that are far more complex than we admit.

The B.C. government has approved a project to replace the Port Renfrew Elementary School and provided almost $12 million.

This funding comes from the province’s seismic mitigation program, which assesses the risk of damage to a building in the event of an earthquake, and provides funds to replace or upgrade high-risk buildings.

“I’m proud that we are continuing to invest in the seismic safety of our students. These upgrades will ensure students in Port Renfrew are safer in school,” Rachna Singh, minister of education and child care said in a news release.
