Yes I am well aware knowing several commerical fishermen both locally in Victoria and on the mainland. And I say - again - whether we're talking about commerical or sport fishing that anyone engaged in either should be well aware by now that environmental conditions are changing and they are changing fast. Salmon stocks everywhere are down generally, catastrophically so in many cases.
They are down because of changing climatic and marine conditions and because of ecosystem degradation largely due to human activities. This is not new nor should it be news to organizations like the PR Chamber. Its been ongoing and well documented for years, whether we're talking about steelhead or chinook or other salmonid populations that have literally crashed in the case of the Thompson River steelhead or the Fraser River where roughly half of its salmon populations are at risk due to overfishing and habitat loss. Chinook are also under duress from the repeated accidental introduction of salmon from hatcheries into wild populations. In freshwater specifically, the salmon are also impacted by the construction of dams and degradation of habitat due to human activities including poor logging practices.
Given all of the above if you continue to be a "one trick pony" town that has done little or nothing to mitigate these factors by making yourself less dependent on an industry that is clearly struggling with an uncertain future at best - frankly - I don't have a lot of sympathy for you.
