There is a new way to relax in Port Renfrew.

Drift Nordic Sauna opened July 23, promising locals and visitors an escape to the rugged beauty of Vancouver Island's west coast.

The new facility features a Nordic sauna circuit on the shores of San Juan Harbour. The Sauna is located next to the Pacific Gateway Marina at 17110 Parkinson Road, owned and operated by Mill Bay Marine Group.

"Drift offers a wellness experience grounded in nature, tranquility and renewal," writes Marlese Plater, marketing coordinator of Mill Bay Marine Group, in a press release.

"Whether you're unwinding after a rainforest hike or simply carving space out for yourself, Drift invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect – with nature, your body, and your senses."

The circuit will include: an electric sauna, two cold plunge tubs, an outdoor cold shower and a relaxation area.

I just prefer the swimming at Botanical Beach. The tidal pools for a nice relaxing dip, and the open ocean for more exhilaration.

[Edit] The Wild Renfrew Group is building another one of these spa facilities close to the restaurant, pub and the cabins. You can walk there as opposed to having to drive. Here is a shot from a couple of weeks ago (while they were still building it) that shows the view looking from inside the facility to the ocean.

Those communities can end up being little party zones. Every time you go to try to relax, someone in earshot of you is getting drunk for the first time.

The strata has to stay on top of the rules and restrictions.

Of course, the province can just come in and ban air bnb whenever they want to.  I'm sure many do not want that risk.

Kind of like Penticton.   The locals get used to it.

Kind of like Penticton.   The locals get used to it.

Penticton Peach Festival is back this week, and locals are urged to prepare ahead for crowds and traffic.

The City of Penticton is encouraging all to take transit, walk or ride bikes whenever possible during the Aug. 6-10 event, while thousands are expected to descend on the city.

A commentary by a Port Renfrew local about his community, but not exclusive to it.

As long as renters are forced to compete directly with Airbnb for housing, the “housing crisis” will only get worse.

In Port Renfrew, there would not be a housing crisis if we stopped Airbnb and its like from operating in residentially zoned areas.

It is absolutely an allocation issue, as opposed to a supply issue, when one can walk through a neighbourhood in the shoulder season and not see a single home with a light on. These homes are left to sit near empty until the next flood of tourism, whilst locals are squeezed out, or into inadequate basements, trailers, vans and boats.

Community is disintegrating, and volunteers are quitting as long-time residents are being forcibly pushed out, due in large part to the allocation of residential homes for Airbnb use.

Locals should be living in homes. Locals should not be camping full-time.

According to the census, the population in Renfrew has shifted like so since 2006 in each census through 2021:

195
125
105
235

So either the census was way off, or there was a more than doubling of the population between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.

Nothing in Renfrew will really take off until the government is replaced. There’s far too much risk of government stepping in and changing the rules on vacation property ownership there.
