The West Coast Trail, which closed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will reopen to overnight Canadian visitors this summer, much to the delight of businesses that rely on tourists drawn to the 75-kilometre trek each year.

Parks Canada, along with the Huu-ay-aht, Pacheedaht and Ditidaht First Nations, announced Friday that the trail will open from June 4 to Sept. 30.

The Pacheedaht people finally started making money from Vancouver Island timber. Then the protesters arrived.

18 year old American. What’s this about foreign influence in domestic matters? How many more Americans are up here?

Also, it sounds like the Fairy Creek protestors are headed for the north Island this spring to protest old growth cutting by Western Forest Products. Wasn’t Fairy Creek the “last” stand?

Joshua Wright, a logging opponent from Union, Mason County, recently on social media put out a new call to action for this spring — including blockades on forests to be cut under Pacheedaht partnerships, beyond Fairy Creek.

“It doesn’t matter who cuts it, the result is the same,” Wright said.

Wright grew up amid industrial timberlands of the Olympic Peninsula and watched the big trees, birds and other wildlife disappear in a third round of clear-cutting trees harvested at 35- to 40-year rotations. “I’ve seen what it looks like when the land loses heart,” Wright said. By now, he said, he sees little around him left worth saving.

“It is one big cornfield, it has been homogenized to such a degree. It is not an ecosystem anymore, it is a farm.”

But the old growth of Vancouver Island has pulled him across the border over the past two summers.

Presumably, for the safety and economic security of all Canadians, the Prime Minister will invoke the Emergency Act again.  <_<

First Nation seeks $24 million to build Grade 6-12 school in Port Renfrew

If the federal government approves the request, students would no longer need to make a three-hour round trip to attend middle-school and secondary-school classes in Sooke

About 300 members of the nation live in the Port Renfrew area, including about 100 on the reserve. Port Renfrew itself has a population of 350 to 400.

I don't quite understand how this school would work.  If it's to be federal, would it accept non-FN students?

The proposal for the school is about 80 students.  Does that give us some clue?  It would be good to know how many take a bus to Sooke today, as it appears some or many use a distance-learning option.

Here are some numbers, not including the reserve.

We happened to be up that way fishing when the band opened up the gas station/bar/store just a few years back, they were so pleased at the time. It was not only a badly needed service but also obviously an employment option for band members. Jeff was on hand and we spent about half an hour picking his brain about various local fishing-related topics. Great guy.

A replacement for Port Renfrew’s aging elementary school is a step closer following a funding announcement by the province, the Pacheedaht First Nation and the Sooke school district.

It’s part of a broader dream that would also include a Pacheedaht-run middle and secondary school, one that would mean the tiny community’s older students would no longer have to endure a three-hour round trip to schools in Sooke, 75 kilometres away.

That long-term plan is seen as a key to Port Renfrew’s future, the idea being that a community with a full K-12 school system would be much more attractive to families and businesses considering locating there.
