Not a tower crane but a rare sight, and an impressive one. Thanks for the pix, VHF:

That thing is huge. (that's what she said).

I saw this monster today. It was taking massive old cooling units off the roof of the library building. Seeing this slender mobile crane--taller than the Sussex Building--deftly handle a heavy load on a fairly windy day was very impressive.

7 full size cranes in downtown Victoria and periphery, one in Colwood:

- Sovereign (Downtown)
- Promontory (Vic West)
- 200 Douglas (James Bay)
- Midtown Court (Burnside)
- Boardwalk (Burnside)
- Era -going up today, June 17 (Downtown)
- Hudson Mews (Downtown)
- one mini crane at Tillicum and Burnside (Saanich) and another on Carey Road (Saanich)

- Capital City Centre (Colwood)

The crane for Duet in James Bay will likely rise as Sovereign's comes down.

Very nice and impressive by Victoria standards, although to keep things in perspective and to put into context what it means to live in a city with real growth, for those NIMBY Victorians especially that fret about the number of construction cranes here - and I heard some disparaging, snooty remark about this in the grocery store just this weekend - consider Calgary and their 2 billion dollar airport expansion, which at this point is barely 50% complete; just a portion of that project includes the longest runway in Canada, a 90 metre NAV tower and 300-room hotel.

I'm there about every 8 weeks and during my last trip in March guesstimated there were roughly ten cranes at the airport alone, never mind the city proper or its immediate environs; today at any one time there are 5:

Hey, airports don't count!

It's true though, massive projects like airport expansions tend to have a plethora of cranes in order to make headway on massive airport terminals.

Anyone actually see the Millennium Water development when it was going up in Vancouver, there were about 12 or 13 cranes working on that development (note the harder to see yellow cranes among the white cranes).

Per-capita I believe the City of Victoria currently has more cranes than the City of Vancouver.

These photos were taken from Uptown last week. Seven tower cranes are visible across the city, not including the (currently) short crane for Era on Yates St. and any other's I've forgotten of. The crane for Sovereign will be coming down in a week and in two weeks a crane will go up for Duet in James Bay.

Duet (left, in front of Orchard House) and the 200 Douglas cranes as seen from the Johnson Street Bridge.

It's too bad the Duet crane is virtually identical in colour to the Orchard House tower. You can easily walk across the bridge and not even notice the crane is there.

There seems to be more cranes coming down than going up, so does that mean a slowdown in new construction after projects that are underway are completed?

I'm not counting the multiple cranes at the JSB site.

I think it's safe to assume the pace of residential construction downtown is slowing down. Union, Mondrian and Promontory aren't sold out. Townline and Bosa seem to have indicated that they won't be moving ahead with future phases in the immediate future.

Things can certainly change in a hurry, but I'd imagine the next projects will be Chard's on Broughton and the new rental building by the arena.

1075 Pandora should get going by years end and the rental in Vic West will as well. We'll gain a couple of cranes before the year is over.

Also there remains a lot of construction going on at the 4 to 6 storey range which does not have tower cranes.

The last remaining crane on the skyline is coming down next Monday. Will this be the first time in several years when there won't be a single crane on the skyline? How long has the last period of at least one crane lasted?
