We often go to Denny's if we want a well priced breakfast and want it quickly.

If you show up on your birthday, your meal is free.

With the place open 24/7 and in a prime location at Douglas and Finlayson,

it could be one of the busiest restaurants in the neighbourhood.

We went there for the first time in years. Of course, the food isn't as good as the high end bistro breakfast joints around town but they are consistent and the service is very fast and efficient. There are no stoner slackers shuffling around trying to figure out which table your meal is supposed to go like you see at so may hipster breakfast joints.

Anyone remember the original green and purple vinyl decor and semi-circular booths?

And now there's the westshore location, too, where the White Spot used to be along Old Island Highway at Goldstream.

Denny's is great every now and then.... but last time there I had the Grand Slamwich... glad I didn't check the sodium content until after I agree it. A little over 1.5 times you daily allowance in one setting.

Last night being a Sunday with not much open in the way of late-night food we decided to amuse ourselves and drove to the Douglas Street Denny's for a small snack. After ordering, one of the employees came to our the side of the restaurant (we were sitting in the section parallel to Finlayson) and started making milkshakes. All of a sudden we heard a loud crash and turned to see he had knocked over the milkshakes onto the floor. Full of rage, he grabbed a large Coca Cola glass and smashed it as hard as be could at a kitchen door immediately to our left, showering our area with glass. As other staff now turned to look at what was going on he stormed off and disappeared. Moments later he reemerged, chuckling and red faced, and made light of the shakes falling. Some moments later he asked if we had been hit, and continued pacing the restaurant.

If not for a small barrier above our booth we would have been hit with glass shards.

We quickly got up and left the restaurant as management scrambled to ease tensions and figure out what happened. I was worried this guy would continue flipping out and wanted out of there immediately.

The other staff were concerned about us and came around to ensure we hadn't been injured. Before we left they packed our food and made it available to us at no charge.

Have to give a tip of the hat to this old standby; we, or at least I, hadn't been to Denny's since hitting one during Calgary Stampede in 2006 at about 5am one night/morning with my motley crew, a dining experience as you might appreciate given the time and the circumstances, I recall not one iota... :)

This morning however we decided to hit the Douglas/Finlayson outlet for breakie after dropping the kidlin' off at her p/t job at Mayfair Mall - it was great!

The service was efficient, prompt and polite; my Prime Rib Egg's Benny was excellent and the price extremely reasonable as you would expect at this no frills 'meat and potato's' restaurant. At the end of the day in spite of recent trends toward hoi poloi, fancy schmancy "fusion" this or that, IMO there is a reason why old stalwarts like Denny's are around years and even decades after supposedly "higher end" eateries in this town bite the dust and go the way of the dodo. The food is consistent, its very good value for money, and the service is solid. Oh yeah, not very surprisingly, the joint was jammed....

San Francisco loses its only Denny's restaurant

The location ceased operations on Aug. 1 and was there for 25 years

The restaurant permanently stopped feeding guests in the Union Square area of San Francisco’s downtown at the beginning of August, SFGATE reported Monday

The outlet cited the franchised location’s operator, Chris Haque. He reportedly said the restaurant "operated until the last day that we could."

_____________

It was reportedly negatively impacted by dining and dashing and other factors.

"The cost of doing business is tremendous. There’s vandalism, and people come and eat and walk away, and there’s no one to stop them," Haque reportedly said.

So if I read that right, Northland already ran many/most Denny's in Canada, but now they will be the excslusive franchisor
