The run was down nearly 1,000 competitors this year.

10,527 this year.

11,524 last year.

Any idea how that compares to previous years?

2015:  10,527

2014:  11,524

2003:  "Nearly 13,000"    http://can.milesplit...-murage-prevail

2012:  12,483   http://www.tc10k.ca/...-29-results.pdf

2011:  13,096   http://www.tc10k.ca/...y-1-results.pdf

These numbers are all registered runners in every class/race.  Of course, every year about 1,000 do not show up, or DNF.

Definitely a downward trend.  I wonder if people are retiring out the top of the age range and less replacing them at the bottom.  It would be interesting to see how that bump is moving.

Honestly, if you are a casual runner, I'm not sure what you have to prove going in this race, what you have to show for your $35-$45 entry fee.  I only ran it when I was fairly competitive, logging anywhere from 39 minutes in the 80's to 58 minutes (two years ago).

^ Average age keeps increasing so the pool of runners keeps shrinking. Everyone and their dog also has a 10k run these days.

I'd like to see a simple Mt. Doug hill climb run. Time trial, no mass start.

Up the road. So you have a starter every 30 seconds or so throughout the day.

It's like all the hell of a tough mudder without the mess. Just legs burn and exhaustion. The real goal is to keep improving on your own year over year time.

Maybe a cool name like "13 Minutes of Hell". Hell seems cooler than "mudder".

There's a Mt. Doug Hill climb for cyclists. You need an insurance waiver. I can climb Mt. Tolmie on a bike but Mt. Doug is out of my league even though I live next door to it.

I recall the northern assault on Mt. Tolmie by bike. 10 speed. Not too bad until that last haul
next o the overflow parking and up to the summit. That was hard.

I like doing the seven sisters in Rockland on my bike. Although most of the time only 4-5 sisters make it to the party.

Rockland Ave, west to east. Down-up Moss, down-up Robleda, down-up St. Charles, down-up Gonzolas, down-up Oak-Shade, down-up Green Oaks.

It's known in the running world apparently, but it still sucks on bike.

The sports car clubs used to do a Mt Doug hill climb back in the mid 50's.

Motorcycles used to have a similar climb on the south side of the mountain during the same years.

That motorcycle hill climb would so be hunted down by environmentalists now it would be painful.

About ten years ago, I used to run up Mt. Doug a lot. Now, now so much. :-)  It's a real sense of accomplishment to get to the top. Unfortunately I learned the hard way that big hills are not great for shin splints. Now I do most of my running on a treadmill, with some trail running and (rarely) a run on pavement. I would have run the TC 10k this year but I had another commitment I couldn't get out of.

There used to be a 5k run up Mt. Doug as part of the Gutbuster trail running series. But I just checked their web site and all the races are on other trails this year.

It costs far too much money for a race that takes most people less than an hour.  They also give you a sub-par T-shirt.  Also it is pretty crowded and should be moved to a staggered start.  The 1/2 marathon race is a nice addition but also costs too much, for what is provided.

That's my thought too.  I don't wear the t-shirt on the run, nor ever after the run.
