The City and individual landlords also power wash sidewalks when cleaning them, which I imagine would chip away this type of paint relatively easily..

If you're going to decorate sidewalks properly either colour the concrete at the time it is poured or better yet, use colour pavers. Painting concrete in high traffic areas will always be a losing proposition.

Last May, the Downtown Victoria Business Association, City of Victoria and Victoria 2020 spent $180,000 on a vision for the high-traffic intersection at Yates and Douglas streets.

Part of that vision included the painting of colourful puzzle pieces on the crosswalks and surrounding sidewalks.

But since then, the paint has deteriorated to the point that it is dull, dirty and faded – prompting criticism from the public on its shabby appearance.

“It’s fair to say that at this point, the way that it looks, nobody likes the crosswalk right now,” said Kerri Milton, Executive Director of the DVA, adding that not even the city likes the art anymore. “We’re very aware that it needs to go.”

Milton told CTV News that the DVBA has always planned to eventually scrap the crosswalk paint, but a date has now officially been set.

“This project was set up as a temporary 18-month project to do something interesting and exciting for this corner,” she said. “That expiration date is September 30th so now we’re in the process of looking at what worked and what didn’t work.”

Not sure I ever heard the 18-month thing before.  Now it looks like a bigger waste of money.

The actual expiration date was about 5 minutes after the first bit of paint was applied to the sidewalks and streets.

Here's a hint to Kerri Milton: none of it really worked. An expensive lesson learn, so please don't repeat the same mistake.

I think the puzzle pieces are kind of cool, but it's going to wear like crazy and look like poo soon.

I actually do remember them saying this was all temporary when it was first done. They wanted to experiment, and then possibly install more permenant installations at a later date.

If my memory serves correct, there was some talk of assessing the project come that fall (the installation went up in May of 2016) but it doesn't look like that was done.

 

Was the puzzle piece thing Ken Kelly's project or Kerri Milton's?
