I do think the pedestrian overpass would have been necessary: the “status quo” could have led to severe traffic congestion at the Beacon Ave / Pat Bay intersection as turning vehicles waited for pedestrians to cross that wide intersection...

As Mike said, Omicron secured their approvals two years ago, so surely difficulties attracting tenants played a part. Originally Omicron had pitched an electronics/appliance retailer for the centre, so maybe Best Buy pulled out?

That is the wrong place for a shopping center. Maybe a park and ride would work.

Come on. The parking lot for all of those planes would have to be huge.

Don't be silly, it's a hotel for airports, not airplanes!

It would have to be GIGANTIC

I was hoping to see this go forward. I run the 10k trail around the airport once a week and this piece of land is horribly underutilized. It was shocking to see opposition to a vacant patch of useless land next to the airport/highway.

Really? I'd be much more shocked if there wasn't opposition to any proposal in the region. Objecting to things is something locals do extremely well.

I think this proposal was one of the major reasons for a lot of opposition to Steve Price and his large defeat

See, I don't really understand that. If Sidney residents didn't like this project they had an ever better way to protest it: don't shop there.

I really don't understand this development or Sandown.  That is a lot of stores that only serve a catchment area of North Saanich and Sidney.  As someone who lives in Central Saanich I just go to stores on my trips south or I shop online.  I will never go to the Sandown Canadian Tire because its way out of my way, instead I'll stop in at the one at Royal Oak if I need anything

If I was Canadian Tire I would be talking to my lawyer if they don't complete it. They signed on being IN a shopping centre not to BE the shopping centre.

I'm from Cent. Saanich as well, and if I want a close option for a Cdn Tire, it'll be the Sandown one. We checked it out yesterday and it is organized and lit similarly to the larger ones in the CRD. That Royal Oak one has to be the worst in so many ways, including the gong show of a parking lot.

I believe CT knew they would be the first and likely sole tenant for quite some time. They're the first phase of the shopping centre. Big-box stores can stand alone and do alright.

That is too far out for a Costco... Jeskens (sp) would of been the best middle ground location. Midway to Victoria and to far from Sidney. The new Costco has to be close enough to the core to pull shoppers from the Langford one.
