^ view royal has always had lower moral values than saanich we all know.

Saanich rejects casino: 'It came down to values,' mayor says

https://www.timescol...says-1.24315255

i mean esquimalt/vic west has the very lowest morals in the region but view royal is pretty bad.

this heat-map provided by the last pass over by the VV satellite shows us.   the satellite extended its moral compass and picked up these readings on the last passby:

screenshot-www.google.com-2021.05.05-14_30_44.jpg

RED is the lowest morals, and as that fades, the region become more upstanding.

understandably, the epicenter of loose morals is CFB Esquimalt.

One person's morals is another person's frown we just live on a big ball of floating dirt.

I find it funny that people get mad at "wokeness". For one thing, nobody actually calls themselves woke. It pretty much only exists on the internet, and the number of people who are truly "woke" is tiny.

But back to the casino, I live in Saanich and I'm not too interested in having a one here. I wouldn't strongly object to one but I'd rather not have it, at least not in the more residential part of the municipality.

In my view a casino would make sense in a location like where the conference centre is- a prominent downtown place with easy access for locals and tourists alike.

What's the point of another neighbourhood casino? Is there enough local demand that the VR casino can't keep up?

If there wasn't enough local demand for a casino, the Province certainly wouldn't be asking Saanich to allow for construction of a casino. They do their homework on these things ... as gambling is a huge profit centre for the Province, and they want to maximize their revenues.

The request was "east" Saanich, which would (in reality) likely be somewhere in the vicinity of the Royal Oak Mall. Uptown would be potentially in the mix ... but would ultimately likely prove to be too close to View Royal.

The Royal Oak Mall area is a buzzing and busy business hub most of the day, and despite residential areas in the vicinity, like many "hubs", it's heavily developed in the middle of that residential area.

The Shelbourne/McKenzie corridor is going through some pretty major development as well, and could equally serve as a vicinity for casino construction.

Pro or con, folks have a right to hold whatever opinion they wish to hold about gambling and casinos, but if they're not in a residential area ... the "residential" argument begins to fade quickly.

My question to the typical Saanich resident living somewhere in Cadboro Bay or Strawberry Vale would be "what do you really care if a casino goes in at Royal Oak"?

I mean you're either against a casino on moral grounds (which would put you against it no matter where it was located), or you're against a casino because you don't want to live near one.

There really is no other reason to "be against" something that will maintain, or reduce your tax burden.

I also get that there are always going to be outright contrarians who don't want what they don't want because they don't want it ... a position that contributes little to the broader discussion, but remains legitimate in its own right.

Are you calling the View Royal casino a neighborhood casino? It's on a major road that is mostly full of car lots and restaurants and both ends of it connect directly to a highway (TCH and Sooke). To me that would be like saying Uptown or Hillside Mall are neighborhood malls because there's housing kinda nearby.

Personally I would be fine with a casino in Saanich. I agree with the above mentioned locations (maybe also Tillicum Mall right near Burnside by Silver City since I think only one of those restaurants is still actually in business although they'd need a lot more parking). Near Royal Oak Mall would be a pretty good area though. I think we were talking about near UVic before but I'm not sure if there's any space there.

Usually just tickets come out no jingling of the coins anymore anyway

Any BC casinos give out real coins anymore?

The demographic slot machines attract at casinos generally can't figure out how to gamble online!

a new stripper bar/casino might be exactly what we need to get out of this COVID funk.  imagine the pent-up demand.  it's the kind of stimulus lots of people will be looking for.

We used to get a few hundred? casinos coming through a year on the cruise ships. If you haven’t noticed every convenience store doubles as a casino.

On the east coast every convenience store has a mini casino inside. I'm not kidding. You walk in to buy an energy drink and some snacks, and there are a few guys sitting around playing slots.

Pfft!  Casino proposals are generated by politicians bereft of any ideas for economic development.  They just prise money out of pockets that might be spent on different entertainment modes.  Cutting down a tree, and making furniture out of it is economic development; building a casino just recirculates pre-existing cash...

there is something to that for sure.  but if a casino exists just 4km from your local border that cash is going to go there anyway in most cases.  if you can keep some close to home that might be worth considering.

What I find most distressing is that BC casinos give real casinos such a bad rap. How much effort would it take to actually build some level of entertainment and excitement into these developments - after all they have unlimited taxpayer money to spend! Instead, any of the casinos I have explored in BC are depressing, pathetic, money sucking vacuums that only care about separating cash from seniors.

What's the latest?

How long does it take for BCLC to ever make a decision?

Are they waiting for FN to organize their space(s)?

What's the odds of this happening, anyone want to roll the dice and make a bet?

Gambling scares me, used to work in a place that sold scratch and win and 6/49 lottery. Didn't think people got addicted to that type of gambling apparently I was wrong, people would come in and spend $100 a day on scratch and wins. I had somebody tell me they spent all their money on losing scratch and wins, and now can't afford to get gas in her car and she didn't think she had enough to get home. Before the government banned employees from playing lottery at their own places of employment to prevent fraud, one of my coworkers was known for playing all the scratching wins during his shift, we would come in the morning and they would all be gone.

But I guess it's an individual's choice and a good revenue stream for the government.. I suppose.

Happening soon, not good odds.

Interesting question. The Mayor has publicly stated her opinion that land purchased by / provided to local FN is not subject to CoV zoning or OCP restrictions so maybe this ties in to her recommendation to the Province to give them more land downtown.

Why not let the homeless run a casino?

2,500 employees are at the ready, now.
