I'd be interested in knowing what these might be, since he doesn't seem to be a fan of the most fundamental kind of residential development, or of selling off useless parcels of city-owned land.

Ya, I'd love to hear what they are too.

I assume Isitt means the boundless pockets of the Victoria tax payer.

There are some people who go to a casino for enjoyment, and are happy with their self-imposed limit and playing within it...a minority I would suggest. Even without the asterisk VHF, 95% is a pretty ridiculous number. It's like the commercials for all the tribal-run casinos in the States. They always show someone winning. Sitting next to them are desperate people pumping their coins into a machine. I have been in plenty of casinos, and I have seen a gambling habit with someone close to me. I have seen how finding a casino becomes a major factor when they travel. It's just like a junkie trying to figure out where he might score in a new city.

It's not like there is no casino in the neighbourhood. View Royal is not very far away. The only possible reason to allow a casino in downtown Victoria is because the city will derive money from it. That's just not a sufficient reason to allow this to go ahead.

The #1 reason to have a casino in downtown is because tourists will enjoy it.  Any attraction that keeps tourists here for another hour, or two or four is needed.  After whale-watching, the museum, a little shopping and then of course dining, what else do we have?  We need more stuff.  What do we have for people to do at night, other than sit in a pub?  Or hope they enjoy whatever is playing at the Royal?  Only the mall stays open late downtown, parks and sightseeing are no good at night.

And YES, the casino brings in money.  LOTS of money.  Not just the normal property taxes, it actually pays you 10% of its profits, and provides its own security for the most part.  That's brilliant!  Who would not want that?

There are probably significally more alcoholics in Victoria than gambling addicts. I guess we should get rid of at least half the bars and pubs.

You are spot on with this comment ... they could also attach a live show theater to go along with it for the tourist season.

Or at least move them to the West Shore, to hide them away from addicts.  If people really want booze, they will have no issues going out there to get it.

Nude mud wrestling is not legal in BC.  No contact allowed between naked entertainers.  They could be in bikinis though.  If the casino was on the water, it could be the perfect launch point for the Boob Cruise, maybe that could run every day, give the Harbour Ferries a real run.

Even if they're not being paid? my camping trip just got a lot messier.

You have to pay people for work.

I suppose there are volunteer entertainers. I guess it's worth looking into.

While I may have some unlikely bedfellows on this issue, I too am opposed to have a gambling hall in downtown Victoria. Other than generating revenue, there are no redeeming social factors about a casino. It's not like the old days where so much revenue went to community organizations. Now it's simply a government money grab from the poor.

Fun for a few, desperation for most. Who will be spending money there? Not the cruise ship passengers who have their own casinos on board. Not the family travellers. Nope. The local folk who have difficulty making ends meet and difficulty resisting the close, handy lure of a casino. If you want to gamble, go to Vegas. If you can't afford to, but must gamble, go to View Royal. We don't need it in Victoria.

The homeless people would have something to spend their $20 "consulting fees" on other than booze and drugs.

i dont understand all the negativity towards casinos. Liquor stores, bars, dollar stores and many other business's sell or service people without alot of money and generally with stuff they dont need either. Have you tried shopping at thriftys lately WTF. I feel poor everytime I walk out of there and trust me half the stuff i see in peoples shopping carts they can live without.  Check out most of the clientelle at a 7-11 or macs downtown and let the picketing begin. As my grandad used to say, you dont buy beer you rent it. There are lots of useless things we covet rich or poor so why pick on one industry? The tax generation side gets way too much play IMHO and that shouldnt be the only reason you do anything. If a casino can act as a catalyst which could help another tough to locate use, like a maritime or childrens museum, find some traction, then use it to our city's advantage. Lots of wealthy people love to gamble too and if we can figure out how to loosen their pockets from time to time, then i say come on lucky 7

Not Vegas. Not clanging slots and crazy carpets. I think a hipster gambling club would be good. Make it reference the gambling of fantan alley during the gold rush.  Just not as many fights, opium, and diseased prostitutes. Well...maybe all those too.
