right. you could renovate the pool itself then work in all the other stuff over the next 5 years with only sporadic closures and detours.

like they do when renovating a shopping centre. rarely any full closure. as difficult and completely transformative as it was they built uptown without closing wlmart at all. the pool would be much easier to do in this way. just takes lnowhow.

Is this from NPNA? It just states that it is a volunteer's assessment. In my opinion the assessment is so simplistic as to be useless.

Not true. They are generally pretty thoughtful and comprehensive in their outreach even though I may not agree with their approach. I am wondering if there are competing groups within the NPNA and that is why the messaging seems inconsistent at this moment.

I don’t buy into this “if we wait another 6 months it’ll cost us $1 million more” garbage.

if that was the case why are we delaying replacing the arena, city hall, utility poles, city vehicles, etc.? if the cost is inevitably just going to be so much more for future replacement.

Actually 6 months costs us between $2M and $3M according to city staff.

 

Of course it is BS. The purpose isn't to provide an accurate estimate of cost, it is to allow staff to increase the size and scope of the pool budget while blaming the NPNA, DRA, Helps' political opponents or anyone else they want. Two years and they can claim that the pool budget is now $79M but that the size and scope haven't changed.

I like linking to new aquatic centre studies* from other communities, so here's yet another one from Yellowknife...

New construction is recommended rather than renovating the existing aquatic centre. Undertaking a renovation would necessitate working with the constraints inherent in the existing facility. A new construction does mean a blank slate which can help ensure the facility is developed exactly as desired to meet community needs.

Biggest problem I see with this council and previous ones is they are so pro small sigs they sacrifice the greater good of the people ... sometimes the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.

 

They were elected to make tough choices and not buckle under to the first SIG that speaks out against the most logical choice.

We haven't heard any CoV officials making any waves on this topic in a while. Has "pool location bingo" been put on hold for the summer? Also, how is securing all those external sources of funding coming along?

My guess is that both the pool and firehall are on ice until the next term. Too much political risk for Helps at this point, she won't want to hurt her odds for her next gig.
