So I guess we have the old pool for another 10 years.  From the TC article, looks like the View Royal YM/WCA is in trouble.  Stew Young will keep Langford's pool afloat, but will the CoV and it's union try to bury it downtown?

Not sure that this is the right thread, but the Westshore may be getting a 4th public pool.  They have one at Juan de Fuca Rec, one at the Y,  one at the Bear Mountain Fitness Centre and now possibly a second at Bear Mountain....

 

 

The deal would see the City of Langford sell the centre, which includes a fitness centre and outdoor pool, for $3,575,000 to Bear Mountain Adventures Ltd., while keeping a 10 per cent discount for Langford residents who use it.  

 

He said Bear Mountain Adventures has ideas for the centre, including possible additions such as a second pool and a children’s splash park.

When Victoria councillors consider their 2022 draft financial plan this month, the Crystal Pool replacement project won’t be part of the discussions.

 

Councillors have decided to push the project to the city’s 2023 strategic plan priority list, leaving it for the next council.

 

Thomas Soulliere, director of parks, recreation and facilities, told councillors at a July meeting that Crystal Pool was the biggest project in the parks and recreation portfolio, and staff were not planning to propose the project be initiated in 2022 given the other projects that had been endorsed in the past year.

 

Mayor Lisa Helps said the city had two big projects on the go and it was a choice between focusing on Crystal Pool or a new central library branch.

Those were the days. From the first post in this thread, dated January 2007.
 

Since then the recreation department has conducted several rounds of consultation, but made precious little progress. Last spring, the department hired a consultant to help organize a community forum in June and “collate” the feedback with the goal of developing a plan some time in the fall.
 
Recreation director Donna Atkinson told council a steering committee is slated to hold further meetings beginning in February.
 
Coun. Helen Hughes warned that rushing into another ill-conceived plan would be a mistake.

Of course when Mayor Helps was promoting CP 5 years ago she told us if we didn't vote to replace it they would have to shut it down because it was in too bad a shape to keep operating.

Just like Mayor Fortin said the old Johnson Street Bridge would need to be closed to traffic if the project wasn't completed by ...what was it again? 2014? The rail span was removed ultra-fast, if we recall.

The City of Victoria’s budget draft for next year doesn’t include the Crystal Pool replacement, meaning the project’s future will be determined by the next mayor and council.

Victoria staff will give council an overarching presentation on the draft financial plan on Monday (Oct. 25), but the budget has the pool project pegged as a 2023 action.

Susan Simmons, an advocate for the pool, was saddened, but not surprised, by the news of the replacement being delayed.

“Based on the current council I’m not shocked,” she said. “They always make it an election issue and then it never goes forward.”

When it comes to priority projects, Alto has two ready to go: the redevelopment of Ship Point and upgrades to Crystal Pool. 

 

With plans already in the works for both projects, making progress over the next four years should be relatively easy, Alto believes.

We shall see.  Progress over the last 15 years hasn't been so "easy".  Will they finally hit their stride around year #20?  It's a a simple swimming pool, FFS.

City councillors not anxious to throw good money after bad

The rising cost of maintenance at Victoria’s aging Crystal Pool has some councillors demanding progress on plans to build a new recreation centre in the city.

Commenting on proposed annual maintenance costs in excess of $900,000 for the coming fiscal year, Coun. Geoff Young suggested the money would be better spent building a new pool and recreation centre.

“This is now a major expenditure program of close to $1 million a year,” he said Tuesday during the first of three special council meetings held to examine the 2007-08 municipal budget.

“My fear is that at some point we’re going to have to say ‘this is ridiculous.’ We’re going to say ‘we can’t afford to do this.’

“At some point it’s going to be cheaper to hire a taxi to go swimming in Saanich.”

The city recreation department unveiled a redevelopment plan for Crystal Pool in 2004, but the proposal called for the closure of several Victoria community centres and met with stiff opposition.
