I'm starting to see a pattern here:

-politicians claim there's a very urgent issue that requires immediate and $$$$ attention,

-the issue gets dragged out for years/decades, thus confirming that the purported urgency was extremely exaggerated if not altogether imaginary,

-people continue to listen to politicians

The first few pages of this thread are like a roll* call of long lost VV forumers.

*role, roll... just roll with it, we're all acting here

You must be quite young if you’re only noticing this now.

I’m not sure but I think aastra is still on his first pair of reading glasses.

Nice way to rub it in. You know the topic of getting older has been on my mind lately, what with my 30th birthday coming up in a few years.

I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes it seems like politicians sort of exaggerate and misrepresent issues just a wee bit in order to make it a little bit easier to gain public acceptance of things that maybe people shouldn't have been quite so willing to accept at face value. I'm not saying it for sure, I'm just putting it out there.

^^ You mean like $10 a day daycare. That one worked twice for Horgan.

Looks like Crystal Pool is coming back to the forefront. Cost estimated to be north of $100M now with Hammond and Caradonna asking that the project be resurrected and that a referendum be considered to approve the funding and provide recommendations for a location.

If this had been Langford and developers actually contributed funds for bonus density gifts then the pool would likely be paid for by now!

With a forecast property tax increase of 9% and interest rates at a generational high, the last thing the CoV can afford right now is a new rec centre. I am disappointed that Hammond is in support of this.

...must receive approval of the electors through a referendum or alternative approval process.

Ah yes, the ol' AAP.

For crying out loud, we just had an election. Literally just had an election. Where the electorate could be asked about these matters, without having to pay for the cost of a referendum or an AAP.

Agreed. This issue should be shelved until the next municipal election.

^ It won't be shelved. The pool has been closed the past couple of days for a "mechanical issue." Nice timing.

Crystal Pool is now closed until mid-February, according to the City's website: https://www.victoria...ystal-pool.html

The pool was closed September 3-25 for annual maintenance. Will the councillors demand to know why this problem appeared a few months later?

Wasn't it MS. Helps who told us that if we didn't replace the pool in 2017 that it would have to be closed because it couldn't be maintained?!

It's a 50 year old pool built cheaply too last as long. There is only so much maintenance you can do on something before too many things start breaking and it has to be closed permanently.

2016:

Victoria councillors will make a decision this week over the fate of the aging Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre.

Built 45 years ago, the Victoria fitness facility is at the end of its useful life.

According to the city’s mayor, not doing anything about it is no longer an option.

“We’ll be making a decision as to whether we’re going to refurbish the pool, renovate the pool or rebuild the pool,” Lisa Helps said.

2015:

Crystal Pool is more than 40 years old and in need of major repair or replacement. The cost of basic repairs for the mechanical systems has been estimated at $6 million, while replacement could cost up to $58 million. A detailed assessment in 2011 found that all of the pool systems were at the end of their useful lives.

It's too bad there is no way the taxpayers of the CoV can afford a new facility at this time. Fortunately there are lots of other facilities in the region.

The thing that stopped the replacement were a few people in North Park complaining about the loss of trees

Britain's oldest swimming pool, built more than 200 years ago, will open to the public for the first time in decades. It is called Cleveland Pools and is located in Bath, Hampton Row. The pool was to be restored after the public raised £8 million.
