Good job everybody, $725 per goose, to get 43 of them.

It was an epic failure. Who orders a cull to occur on only one day?

Wow, I think you guys have a hard time with the concept of "test".

What ridiculous criticisms.

OK, so it's a very expensive "test".  What did we learn?

I'm still unclear why we have to go out of our way to do a "humane" cull.  We don't kill other pests like rats, or even fish we use for food in any type of humane way.

If the actual large-scale cull ends up costing $7.25 per goose then I suppose we could say the inexplicably expensive testing was somewhat justified. But in the year 2015 we simply shouldn't need to be doing expensive testing for such simple procedures, especially when countless other jurisdictions have already done research, testing, and actual large-scale culls ahead of us. It reminds me of the countless redundant reports from countless different jurisdictions re: deer overpopulation.

The first of the 2010 cull took place in New York City's Prospect Park last week. In a quiet move, all the Canadian Geese living at the park, about 400 Geese, were scooped up in one day by officials. The Geese were taken to a building where they were killed with carbon dioxide gas. After being gassed, the birds' bodies were "double-bagged" and taken to the landfill.

Up to 18,000 canada geese have been destroyed in a series of moult culls across the central South Island (New Zealand).

In the most recent cull, on Thursday, about 1500 birds at Wainono Lagoon were killed, Federated Farmers High Country farmer Simon Williamson said.

They've acknowledged that the birds ended up hanging around in a different location than they had previously thought and they couldn't do anything about it because of the permit applying to only one day.

The exercise was a dud.

Sounds like someone on the inside tipped them off.

You can buy a lot of shotgun shells for less than $725.

Greater Victoria already has a bunch of introduced species including rabbits, quail, pheasants, pigeons, grey squirrels, peacocks, american bullfrogs, eurasian rats... how about a gorilla? He'd surely take care of the geese problem ASAP.*

*we might need an expensive study to confirm this

When the avian flu was going around they killed hundreds of thousands of chickens all across the country, I'm pretty sure they weren't breaking their necks at $725 per bird either.

The first cases of a highly contagious avian flu that has been spreading rapidly across the U.S., wreaking havoc on the poultry industry, were confirmed in Michigan today by state officials.

The highly pathogenic H5N2 virus was found in three young Canada geese discovered to be ill near ponds at the Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights on May 28, 29 and June 1.

Bird at the grocery store is going for a lot less than $725

Clearly what officialdom wants is to have the support from the community to create another government service, wildlife management, or something along those lines. The CRD will justify an additional million dollars from tax payers each year to manage our urban bunnies, squirrels, frogs, geese, deer, bears and cougars. I guarantee you that's where we're headed.
