Clearly what officialdom wants is to have the support from the community to create another government service, wildlife management, or something along those lines. The CRD will justify an additional million dollars from tax payers each year to manage our urban bunnies, squirrels, frogs, geese, deer, bears and cougars. I guarantee you that's where we're headed.

My difficulty is where do we draw the line, or why do we draw the line?  I've already said fish caught for human consumption and rats killed as pests are not killed humanely.

I can't understand why pets released into the wild (the rabbits) can't just be scooped up and moved or put into a shelter.  If people dumped their dogs or cats or horses or goldfish at Helmcken, and provided they all decided to just stay there (like the rabbits seem to), would we have to go through all kinds of bureaucracy to remove them?

It was an epic failure. Who orders a cull to occur on only one day?

Goosebusters...who ya gonna cull?

Personally I'm more concerned about the Deer but Geese are a real economic/food security headache, wonder how many Geese farmers manage to shoot in a day. For what the cull cost Oak Bay for 11 Deer it was not cheap but relatively speaking it wasn't bad, Spayvac is estimated to be a higher cost than the cull.(see post #267111 in "Deer Cull in Greater Victoria") Most Oak Bay residents anyhow from what indicators I've seen would like to see their tax money spent on additional Deer culls. With the pilot Deer cull in Oak Bay hopefully the municipality has learned how to be a bit more cost efficient with a Deer cull in the future.

I think it's got to be regional.  Make the decision that every deer seen within a certain boundary will be killed.  That'll include all of Victoria, Oak Bay and Esquimalt, east half of Saanich etc.

The farmers should be allowed to shoot deer and geese if they damage their crops, or is it only turkeys that have crops.

November 04, 2015 04:54 from Kyle Reynolds

Juan de Fuca Regional Director Mike Hicks made the case for a full scale resident goose cull, as the CRD Board accepted a report summarizing a pilot project this past summer.

Hicks says there's no point taking out a few dozen geese. He says you either remove hundreds or thousands of them, or you live with them.
"We've got to put hunters in touch with farmers.

The Capital Regional District will urge the five rural municipalities within the district to liberalize their local by-laws to allow more shooting of geese by licenced farmers.

This goose cull cost Parksville taxpayers an estimated $35,000. Just a few thousand over what the Capital Regional District paid to cull a total of 43 geese in 2015. Costing taxpayers $725 a goose, because the flocks flew away from those trying to capture them.

Hundreds of Canada geese culled in Parksville

As many as 500 Canada geese have been killed in a mass cull in Parksville, as that seaside community preps parks and beaches for a massive migration of tourists headed there for summer vacation.

http://www.cheknews....ksville-192996/

On Sunday, the resident Canada geese that have become a nuisance in this tourist destination as they’re numbers have multiplied, were rounded up in tennis courts and the city says “humanely culled” according to provincial regulations.

And to think we are getting rid of the Topaz tennis courts.  We could have had a tent city / goose kill pen /  abattoir / goose-meat sandwiches booth there.

The homeless there could have been trained in a variety of skills.  Goose-herding, goose neck-snapping, goose skinning and preparing, goose cooking, and then retail and hospitality training like goose-serving, sandwich-making, selling etc.

Golden egg laying goosese were culled long ago.

I think that's the plural of goose

If you have and goose and geese, mouse and mouse, why can't you have house and hice.

So, other than the physical characteristics of a goose compared to a rabbit (rabbit is cuter to humans), why would we propose a kill of the geese, but a relocation of the Helmcken rabbits?

^Same reason that people protest against the seal hunt but don't say anything about the cod fishery.

So just looks then?  Sort of the same reason we are going to spend $55M on the missing and murdered aboriginal women enquiry/case, while 70% of the missing and aboriginal people over the same time frame are male.
