The beach, dunes, wetlands and endangered species of Island View Beach Regional Park require protection, but within boundaries that will still provide 630,000 annual visitors with an enjoyable stay.

That’s the balancing act that Capital Regional District Parks and the public are engaged in with the ongoing review to update the 1989 management plan for the Central Saanich destination.

Issues range from repairing the boat ramp to installing more boardwalk, accommodating dog walkers and avoiding mosquito infestations if the man-made beach berm is altered. Not to mention the lack of flush toilets and dog-waste bag dispensers.

Here's the new management plan for the soon to be renamed Island View Dog Park. I guess the wildlife will have to find somewhere else to live. Maybe we should try to set aside some special areas where natural species can live and grow in peace. Oh wait...

You do know we live on a very undeveloped island with many MANY hectares of wildlife area completely and totally undisturbed, and that this type of plan give people a place to go while the other unaccessable ones remain protected, right?

Sand dune ecosystems are extremely rare on our rocky coast. Every single one is very important for numerous species. You can build a dog park anywhere but you can't build natural habitats.

Plan came to a halt yesterday when the native band next door delivered a letter.

"undeveloped island". Have you seen how many sq km of cut block there are on Vancouver Island? There pretty much isn't a place on this island that hasn't seen some sort of industrial activity at some point in the last 150 years.

Keep the dogs out, and the mosquitoes in.

Keep the dogs out, and the mosquitoes in.

Or breed mosquito-eating dogs.

The saga of the Island View Beach management plan took an unexpected turn at the Wednesday afternoon meeting of the CRD when board chair, Barb Desjardins, told committee members she had received a letter from the Tsawout First Nation.

The opening paragraph of that correspondence read:

“The Tsawout First Nation does not support the current draft Island View Beach Regional Park Management Plan. (the plan) does not provide a decision -making role for the Tsawout First Nation in the management of our traditional lands that are included within the park”

Gwen Underwood, the Tsawout Lands Manager said that, despite meeting with the CRD for years, their concerns have not been addressed. She went on to say that most of the users of the park are very respectful of the area, but cited dog walking companies who arrive at the beach with up to eight dogs at a time as an example of a practice that needs to be addressed.

“We aren’t just stakeholders in this process. We’ve been here for thousands of years and we need to be treated as a local government,” said Underwood. “It’s why we sent the letter.”

There was a near drowning here yesterday afternoon. The child's mother was able to rescue him or her, but the situation appeared to have been quite tense.

Now that the Tsawout are involved, and all...

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?
