I took some photos from the Santa Parade last night.  You can find them in my Flickr album here:  https://www.flickr.c...157661094316409

According to organisers, an estimated 40,000 people packed downtown Victoria for the annual Santa light parade last night.

“It was the biggest we have ever had,” said Kelly Kurta, the general manager of the Greater Victoria Festival Society. “It’s the largest in western Canada.”

Kurta says they received 84 separate entries this year.

“So many people wanted an opportunity to join in the parade.”

The usual count for the event comes in at around 30,000 people but she thinks it was closer to 40,000 this year.

Kurta wouldn't give up who the society thinks won the best float distinction but did say they would release the winner in the next couple of days.

It was pretty packed downtown.  We decided to skip any of the downtown Starbucks for our post-parade hot chocolates and went to the one @ Gorge and Tillicum.  We were the only ones in there.

As usual, BC Transit was running late causing a large gap towards the end of the parade :P

Any Douglas buses' schedules were definitely affected by the parade traffic downtown.  Traffic was hardly moving from Hillside in at 5pm.

Of course it happened. Why wouldn’t it have?

A VicPD officer working to help keep the Santa Claus Parade safe and family-friendly was injured after a man fought with officers who were arresting him after he allegedly assaulted a person in the crowd this evening.

Officers were deployed to the Peninsula Co-op Santa Claus Parade as part of a special duty to help ensure the event was safe and family-friendly. Additionally, a VicPD contingent were walking in the parade and handing out candy canes. A parade spectator approached members of the VicPD contingent to report that a man had assaulted a member of the crowd and was walking through the crowd trying to instigate additional fights.

Officers approached the man and escorted him away from the parade route in an effort to effect a safe arrest in a safe location away from bystanders and children in the area. When officers moved to arrest the man, he began to fight with them. After several minutes, officers were able to take the man into custody. A VicPD officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the arrest. The man was not injured. The parade spectator did not require medical attention.

The man was transported to VicPD cells where he remains. The parade continued without further incident.

If you witnessed this incident, have video of the incident or the man’s arrest or have information about this incident and have yet to speak with an officer please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.

Know it all.

Why would a family event be immune from the ****hole that downtown has become?

Trucks ready to roll in 23rd light parade on Saturday night

Plenty of time and effort go into decorating the entries in the annual Island Equipment Owners Association Truck Light Convoy and Food Drive, like the dump truck and equipment trailer being transformed in his friend’s garage by Mark Volk and a team of volunteers all this week and last.

Volk, who runs H. Volk Transport, is president of the association and an enthusiastic participant in the popular event, which returns to Greater Victoria streets on Saturday.
