The City of Victoria has received an application regarding a liquor licence proposing a new outdoor patio at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.

The patio would be located on the property at 1925 Blanshard Street and set back from the intersection of Caledonia Avenue and Blanshard Street. The proposal includes an occupant load of 450, with no overall increase to the existing total occupant load of 9,398, which already includes an existing 60-person patio area. Proposed patio hours are 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., daily.

Just gonna reiterate. The name sounds like a memorial for save on foods. It’s the second worst arena name I’ve ever heard. (Climate pledge arena being first).

When do the naming rights expire? I'd definitely prefer a better name too.

Vibrant Victoria Arena would sound great... pony up, Mike!

Save On Foods is pretty low on the scale of good names, I will concede that.

Overwaitea Memorial Centre would be better.

overwaitea memorial centre at least makes sense since we don’t have overwaitea anymore.

Whoever decided to sell the naming rights but keep the “memorial” needs a new career.

IIRC it was a choice by SOF to maintain “memorial” but they were not required to.

It would have been very damaging to the company had they dropped memorial from the name. Today, maybe not so much. But definitely 20 years ago.

The Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre (SOFMC) is looking at potentially opening a large, 450-person patio outside the arena in downtown Victoria.

The centre filed an application with the city to open the patio near the intersection of Blanshard Street and Caledonia Avenue.

The 450 occupancy total would not be an increase to the arena’s current maximum capacity of 9,398 occupants.

The proposed patio hours would be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on days the arena is holding an event, according to the City of Victoria.
