A trained safety attendant is always on board and can take over control of the vehicle manually if needed, Durham Region Transit says.

What was the operator doing if there was one?

Here's the issue with having a human ready to take over at any time - you're expecting the level of focus and attention normally expected from an actual driver, from someone who is just sitting there, not actively engaged with and operating the vehicle's controls.  That would likely be incredibly fatiguing in its own way.

Proving just how dangerous automated vehicles are, at least at this stage of their baby years.

There's what, five of these guys? Maybe ten doing this job? And one has been seriously injured. Those are some seriously bad odds.

Waymo has a pretty solid safety record.

Sure, but the sample size remains quite small. We'll see how it goes when they have a million cars operating (currently they're at 2.5% of that).

Have to consider how much they've driven, too...

Overall, Waymo has a strong safety record. Waymo has racked up more than 20 million testing miles in Arizona, California, and other states. This is far more than any human being will drive in a lifetime. Waymo's vehicles have been involved in a relatively small number of crashes. These crashes have been overwhelmingly minor with no fatalities and few if any serious injuries. Waymo says that a large majority of those crashes have been the fault of the other driver. So it's very possible that Waymo's self-driving software is significantly safer than a human driver.

Every year Vancouver Island drivers, not including the rest of BC, drive about 35 million kilometres.

Wayno is just a baby, and I’m willing to bet much of its driving is along freeways, where it’s easiest to automate driving relative to distance.

And Vancouver Island drivers are crashing and dying at a rate far higher than Waymo.

200 car crash deaths in North America just this past weekend, and 1,500 injuries too.

Self-driving will not be nearly as bad as humans.

I'm not saying I like the idea, hell I get bored out of my mind anytime I have the misfortune of driving an automatic.

Anyway, the Waymo cars do look pretty silly with all their external sensors and cameras.  Something Homer Simpson would design

25 billion kilometres driven over the weekend, though.

Rivian has shed 50% of its value after hitting ~$180 following its ~$80 IPO. It’s skirting around the low $90s at-present.

BYD cars have gone on sale in Australia.  About $30,000 US.

The first BYD e6 people movers have been delivered to customers at two MyCar centres in Sydney and Brisbane, by BYD partner and importer EV Direct.

And, on February 18, 2022, the first BYD “experience centre” will officially open in Sydney. We can now share with you first images of the showroom’s ground floor interior: a minimal white space with room enough for two vehicles, and an industrial-style brick wall at the back.

EVDirect boss Luke Todd has confirmed BYD’s  EA1 electric hatchback, otherwise known as the Dolphin to drivers in China, will be on the floor when the showroom opens.

BYD has been increasing their output by about 10,000 cars every month over month.

Aptera:

Chris Anthony, co-founder and co-CEO of Aptera, is sitting at a desk talking loudly over the sound of grinding metal coming from just beyond his office door. We are in Aptera’s San Diego headquarters, and it’s exactly the kind of frenzied atmosphere expected for a tech start-up circa 2021. A few yards from where we are sitting, rows of youthful engineers (most recruited from the aerospace sector) stare intently into computer screens. Others are fabricating bits using machinery that defies identification. Behind Anthony, a whiteboard running the length of the room is covered in mathematical equations that look like they would stymie Einstein.

____________________________

Aptera’s goal is ambitious, audacious, and awesome: a solar electric vehicle that requires no charging for most daily use but can be plugged in to reach a claimed 1000-mile range. Covered in mostly inconspicuous solar panels, it can deliver about 40 miles’ worth of sun-powered driving per day. Most drivers could get through a work week on free solar miles.

Tesla has removed pricing information for the new Roadster and stopped taking reservations for the $250,000 Founders Series version.

__________________________

Tesla has also been expected to modify the trims and specs of the new Roadster since Musk has been talking about adding a ‘SpaceX package‘ to the vehicle that would add cold air thrusters to boost performance.

The company has been talking about a 1.1-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration with the package, and Musk said that it could even hover in the air.

This could be for sale at about $29,000 US in Australia in February 2022.

Warren Buffet-backed Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled a compact SUV – the BYD Yuan Plus. It could be the company’s next electric car launch in Europe following the BYD Tang EV that went on sale in Norway in August 2021.

The BYD Yuan Plus is undoubtedly going to the company’s overseas markets. Nexport is the official BYD importer in Australia and New Zealand, and CEO Luke Todd has told The Driven that Australian deliveries would begin in April 2022.

BYD-Yuan-Plus-front-three-quarters-1-102

In Australia, Nexport plans to open the country’s first BYD showroom in Woolloomooloo, a suburb in Sydney. Todd has told Drive that the company has taken four floors and plans to integrate an experience centre and a technology education cinema area at the first BYD Sydney dealership.

BYD is planning the Yuan Plus in two variants, an entry-level for an aggressive price and a fully-appointed model appealing to Australian customers seeking more equipment. Australian media expects the BYD Yuan Plus to be the country’s cheapest electric car, with prices starting at under AUD 40,000 (~ $29,000 USD) drive-away.

Motor Mouth: These numbers decide whether hydrogen or electric cars win out

The future of fuel-cell vehicles hinges on our ability to produce hydrogen cleanly and cheaply—here's the math that determines whether it'll work

^ Here is a major problem:

According to the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, there’s but one in the Greater Toronto Area. Ditto for the entire province of Quebec.

However, after many fits and starts, the pace of development seems to be rapidly increasing. Geazone, a British Columbia courier company, recently ordered 40 Toyota Mirais because they are well served by four strategically-located hydrogen refueling stations — three in the Vancouver area and another in Victoria — from HTEC Hydrogen and Energy Corp. According to the CHFCA, three more are under construction, while the British Columbia government has committed $10 million to build more still.

Meanwhile, there are now some 47 hydrogen refueling stations in California and, according to the California Fuel Cell Partnership, another 127 in various stages of development. And, in Europe, Bosch recently committed one billion euros to develop infrastructure for hydrogen-fueled vehicles, all part of a green hydrogen economy the company estimates will be worth 40 billion euros by 2030. A hydrogen refueling infrastructure is coming; it’s just a matter of how soon.

Whereas every SFD homeowner has an electrical outlet.

And the majority of those electric outlets in North America are driven by coal. I know BC is different but it is a problem,
