Have to love how smart they are on the business side of things at Tesla. Since they are production constrained they are pumping out high margin cars and people are still going for it even if they don't need it just to get their hands on it. So many crazy posts on local Tesla forums/FB...person below forking over 30k extra and my guess is production costs are less than 5k extra for Plaid.

"I feel kind of insane that i just put a deposit down for a Model X plaid instead of a regular Model X just because I want it in 2022 instead of having to wait until 2023.

I think it's especially insane because the Plaid will be classified as a supercar in British Columbia with all the insurance hassles that go along with it."

Doug Demuro was on the TST podcast talking about wait times and accessibility of luxury goods. He noted people paying over sticker for RAV4 Primes, buying up used Ferrari's and Rolex's to get in on new models (even if the new model is actually modestly priced), and the sale prices of used cars on his site, Cars and Bids. Its a crazy world where a lot of people have a lot of money burning a hole in their pockets.

Shares of Tesla continued to jump on Monday, a day after the electric vehicle company beat fourth-quarter and full-year delivery expectations.

The stock was up more than 7% in the premarket.

Tesla delivered 308,600 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2021. For the full year, Tesla delivered 936,172 vehicles, marking an 87% rise year-over-year. Wall Street analysts had anticipated Tesla deliveries of 267,000 in the fourth quarter and 897,000 for all of 2021, according to a consensus compiled by FactSet.

At 621 miles of range on an efficiency of more than 6 miles per kWh, Mercedes envisions the hypermiler's electric luxury car.

The rest of the cabin is a collection of sustainable materials (the Concept EQXX boasts both cactus-based and mushroom-based leathers) and uniquely-designed bucket seats.

It may be a bit of a misnomer (it’s not meant for the moon, nor is it a bike), but Moonbikes’ wild-looking new electric snow vehicle sure is turning heads.

The single-track snowmobile, for lack of a better term, seems to combine several aspects of snowmobiles and two-wheelers like bikes and motorcycles.

The device is powered by a 3 kW (4 hp) electric motor and reaches a top speed of 42 km/h (26 mph).

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) outsold General Motors Co (GM.N) in the United States in 2021, marking the first time the Detroit automaker has not led U.S. auto sales for a full year since 1931.

Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States in 2021, compared with 2.218 million for General Motors, the automakers said on Tuesday.

GM's U.S. sales were down 13% for 2021 - and down 43% in the fourth quarter - while Toyota was up 10% for the year. GM last had lower sales in 2010 at 2.202 million.

And/or a lot of people borrowing money against the increased value of their homes!

China electric vehicle leader BYD today added its name to a list of makers in the country to report a big increase in business in December and cap a year of rapid growth.

BYD, the Shenzhen-headquartered vehicle and battery maker backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, said on Monday sales of new energy vehicles more than tripled in September to 93,945 compared with 28,841 a year earlier.

For all of 2021, it sold 603,782 new energy vehicles, compared with new 189,689 in 2020, an increase of 218% from a year earlier, the company said in an announcement.

Earlier this month, BYD domestic rivals XPeng – backed by Alibaba, NIO – backed by Tencent, and Li Auto all reported big increases in December and full-year deliveries in China, the world’s largest auto market and second-largest economy (see related post here).

General Motors unveiled an all-electric version of its popular Chevrolet Silverado Wednesday as GM aims to ramp up EV production and compete in the EV pickup space with rival Ford.

The new-from-the-ground-up Silverado EV will go on sale in Canada in Spring 2023, initially as a fleet-only WT (Work Truck) model followed in the fall by the retail RST (Rally Sport Truck) in a fully loaded First Edition asking $119,948. Both those versions will have a predicted range of 640 kilometres.

GM only shipped 36 electric cars in Q4, with Bolt production still halted. Tesla shipped 393,000.

2023 will be the year that Tesla is surpassed. Almost every manufacturer will be in fully production of electric platformed vehicles by then. Ford alone is expected to deliver 150K+ electric F150's this year.

That’s not accurate at all.

They will not hit the 150k per year rate until the middle of 2023.

https://www.theverge...n-150000-annual

They will probably be lucky to make 50,000 this year.

The first Tesla Megachargers have arrived at Frito-Lay’s facility in Modesto, California, just in time for the first Tesla Semis to be delivered to PepsiCo later this month.

We first learned this facility was going to be receiving Megachargers when permit applications for their installation were uncovered in May last year.

In November the permit was finally issued, with Tesla beginning construction just a few weeks later.

Another big step in the construction process took place today with the unboxing of the first Megachargers.

They're taking a very different tack than Ford, whose F-150 lightning more or less resembles the regular truck and is not insanely priced. $120k for a pickup?!

Does Anyone Want an Electric Car? (roadandtrack.com)

Interesting, still got a ways to go

The big insights come with the subject of intentionality. That is what consumers expect to buy next. In the U.S. fully 69 percent of consumers expect their next vehicle to be powered by internal combustion. Another 22 percent will go for some sort of hybrid. But still, amid all this, only about five percent of Americans expect their next vehicle will be a fully-electric, battery-fueled machine.

Heres a sneak peak at Canadian pricing for the F150 Lightning.

Basically the XLT starts at $70k but its pretty loaded so doesnt have many add-ons

Lariat $82k and Platinum at $112k
